Hello!

My new horse came with a wilkie snaffle (cavesson noseband) and a martingale.

I have been riding her for 2 weeks and haven't changed anything whilst I get to know her.

Had our first flat lesson last night - minus the martingale.
She was absolutley fine - will probably put it back on loosely for jumping and hacking 'til i get to know her a bit better.
We have a jumping lesson later this week

So anyway onto the bitting - she's currently in a wilkie snaffle.

Flatwork wise we are going right back to basics. She doesn't like working properly so main priority atm is getting her to use her back end and stop hollowing out.

As a wilkie isn't DR or showing legal I was thinking of trying something else..
Is this the best plan? What would you try? Should I wait a bit longer before experimenting?
Her old owner rode her in a loose ring double jointed snaffle for DR.

I am happy to keep using the wilkie for jumping as I don't want to mess around with a system that works until I know her a lot better.

Thanks in advance!! As you can probably tell all my old horses were in snaffles with cavessons

I would go for the loose ring french link, nicest bit IMO

I agree with Weezy or a hollow mouth, loose ring, chunky snaffle with a lozenge (like a training bit) or a german silver loose ring snaffle with a lozenge. The warmer metal helps salivation and Mr D gets on much better with a lozenge rather than a french link. But that is just him- but I would def try a couple of loose ring snaffle options

Hmm one minute they work the next they look like garbage so I will just post regular links!

I agree with Law, put her in a nice simple loose ring with a lozange to take her right back to basics. I love these bits and have J in one some of the time, alough he is quite fussy with the contact so goes in a fulmer french link most of the time which sits a bit stiller in the mouth (although if I leave this in all the time he just sets onto it

Yeah would definitely want to trial them first. Frogpool is 5 mins from the yar (lethal!) so I can just pop in and try the first one this weekend.

Thanks everyone
