Bitting Suggestion?...

My horse is currently in a loose ring with a copper lozenge, which she's fine in for hacking/schooling/jumping smaller courses. However, we're starting to jump bigger courses, and I lose a lot of control, ending up with flat jumps and bad strides so am looking for a new bit to try. She leans and goes flat without being particularly strong, but a few strides before the jump she tries to stick her ears up my nose! (Currently in a running martingale for jumping, I'd like to not need it soon.)

Her previous owner jumped anything over 1m with a tom thumb (UK version with copper rollers) so I was wondering:
Is it correct to ride with one or two reins?
Are you supposed to have a curb?
What is the action of this bit? (head raising, lowering, poll pressure etc)
Can you use a martingale with this?
Does anyone have a better suggestion to try?

This would only be a short-term solution, I'd mainly be working on schooling!

I've always been told Pelham type bits to lower the head & gags to raise the head, seems to be correct !

I wouldn't go for a tom thumb straight away as they are pretty strong in general.

You can get a snaffle with a copper scrub board mouth piece which is the mouth piece a lot of tom thumbs have, might be worth trying that they are pretty cheap to pick up & you can use them 2 ways for different strengths
