Horse currently in a Myler Comfort Snaffle with wide barrel but is hanging on the rein a bit. Instructor schooled him today and left me a message saying he'd been hanging on the rein in turns and did I think his current bit was the best for him.

So, any suggestions? Would prefer something dressage legal....had him in a waterford snaffle for the first year to 18 months I had him, has been out of it for at least 18 months so I feel something like that would be a backwards step. He will not go forwards at all in a single jointed bit, just stands on his back legs

Instructor is suggesting a french link, which I must admit I've never tried him in (I do know what it does etc though). Anyone have any other suggestions? He's a 14.2hh chunky Welsh D, nice soft mouth usually, fat tongue so can't use chunky bits. I'd rather not go down the route of expensive bits like Myler, Neue (sp?) Schule etc.

Thanks

Ooo, another thought....teeth are normally done every 12 months as he doesn't usually need them done more, however it's been 6 months dead on and wondering if maybe it's a teeth thing instead? Maybe worth chatting to the vet about it as it's only really started recently. Having said that, he does know every evasion in the book so it might just be the next on the list....

CC I was going to suggest a Neue Schule Tranz Lozenge loose ring - really seem to work to bring some delicacy to the aids whilst being a kind dressage legal bit. The other bit I use which I really rate (and thanks to Pootler on here for sending it to me) is a JP loose ring snaffle. I know you said yours hates single jointed bits but they do do a french link version. The Neue Schule I mentioned is about £35 - £40 but the JP's are around £10

i've had success on a similar sounding horse in a Neue Schule, however you can now get loads of NS copies of ebay/in tackshops for under £15, I got mine off ebay, its a trans lozenge loose ring style but with a copper lozenge... type lozenge bit into ebay....

Put my cob (like yours, he hates single joints and thick mouthpieces, he leans and knows every evasion tactic in the book!!) in a french link - (was in NeueSchule Comfy contact filet bauscher and leant like hell!!!) French link has worked wonders and he is working much lower and longer and more rounded than before - definitely worth a try IMO.

Hello,

Yep, might just take you up on that. Have borrowed a french link from someone at the yard to try tomorrow but I might give you a call over the weekend if he doesn't get on with it. Thanks.
