Took my boy out hunting today, he is a 7year old ID X TB X connemara.
It was his first time and he was impeciable in every way... other than i couldnt stop!!!

He was ridden in a 3 hole gag.. and was on the 3rd hole!
I really need a bit which will make him stop and think.

Thanks

Hi im a fan of the peewee bit by old mac , straight sweet iron mullen bit that will not allow them to get away from you, it was designed for people who cannot have a horse pulling on them ,so gives great brakes. you can try one from the bit bank.x:D

it is most likely to be a case of experimenting until you find the one that works.

I went through:
vulcanite pelham
butterfly pelham
4 ring dutch gag
myler combination bit
and finally ended up using a double bridle.

It works for us because he doesn't just shove his head down, and it doesn't encourage him to go up. It also means I can ride him on the bradoon rein when he's being nice, and both when he's being strong.

You def need good brakes - nothing worse out hunting than an out-of-control horse, it's a disaster waiting to happen!

I hunt in a mullen mouth pelham with roundings (ride in loose ring french link on flat normally) and it definitely gives me the brakes I need.

Experimenting is the way, and when you find something that works, stick to it! I've tried downgrading to a Dr Bristol or a Kimblewick this year, as I feel the pelham is unnecessary a lot of the time, but he pulls like a train in both of those. So we'll stick to the pelham, and I ride on a loose rein most of the time!

Maybe try a pelham - my horse hated a Dutch Gag, and it barely gave me any more brakes than a snaffle.
