Bizarre horse prices

Just been looking on Horse Quest; really I don't understand how some people come up with the prices they slap on their horses!

For example:

5 year old gelding, placed at PN but yet to do a Novice, admittedly qualified for BYEH & PAVO finals but even still - would you pay £37,000 for it?!

Also Novice horse with 10 BE points - £30k

Meanwhile proven horse with 50 points, placed at intermediate every time this year and shortlisted for Junior team is only £25k - incidentally same price as 7 year old with 1 BE point and half a season's experience eventing.

Admittedly I'm not taking age into account here, but even still - ???!

Weird.

A horse with some talent, recently upgraded to advanced with some CCI** experience would be worth in the region of £30-35K so where do some people get these prices from??

For good young horses with potential I know from personal experince that people are paying these prices. For quality 4 yr olds that get to the YEH final people can get £20 000 plus

Many private sellers have no real idea of how much their horse is actually worth. They invariably over value the animal.

To get a true picture of what a horse is genuinely worth in the market place you need to see a well respected dealer yard & the prices there will be a more realistic price.

A friend of mine is trying to find a horse, something sane sensible and trainable age 6-12 to do mainly dressage and hacking so good in traffic!!!!!! for around 7K........... when you ring half the phone nos they don't answer and worse still when you trek half way around the country they are nothing like vid/pic/discription soooo infuriating most of the prices areway over what the horse is worth what ever happened to good home more important than price!!!!!!!!!!

People seem willing to pay the money if they think it has 4* potential. A horse competing at 2* level with the potential to go 4* would probably be £ 70 000 plus. However a 2* horse that would go no further would maybe be £ 20 000. A young horse with the attributes to go all the way would be around £25 000 plus.

I dread to think what the insurance premiums are on such expensive horses...

Yes I would'nt be able to afford to insure for it's full value.
