kids would ask me

Doesn't need to be too acurate, more is it a couple of foot, several meters or miles

Our 2 ponies can hear me put the key in the back door to open it in the morning (3 locks to undo) - and they're generally 600ft+ away when I start, and waiting at the fence before I've opened it.

I'd say further than you think. Wind direction would also come in to it too.
