Yesterday I was at a gymkhana with my parents, brother and his kids. The flies were bothering the pony despite a good slathering in coopers fly repellent, and my brother pipes up with; "WD40 is a really good fly repellent, pigeons don't like it either".

Apparently WD40 (whose main ingredient is fish oils) seriously repels flies and pigeons. He knows this to be true because he came upon the information whilst searching for a way to get rid of the pigeons which poo all over his patio - spray the tree and the birds didn't come back for at least a week :S

Dad then pipes up with "I put it on my trout fishing flies, fish love it". Weird!

So I googled it and apparently farmers sometimes use it on cows to keep the flies away! Not sure I'd try it myself but made me wonder what other kind of bizarre uses people put weird and wonderful things to!

I wouldn't mind trying that! I spray my clippers with WD40 when I clip her so if she was to react to it I think she would have by now, after 4 clips or 2 years :)
I use bio-washing powder for her tail, only the hair. Add it to warm water and keep in a bucket for aprox 5 min, lovely white tail, smells good and is very well conditioned and soft too :D
I can't think of anything else atm but i'm sure there are things that I use that's considered weird :)

Baby wipes are far better for getting nostrils clean for shows and are also great for cleaning the dock area.

Hairspray removes hoof paint from hands and from the hooves after the shoe.

Baby powder for nappy rash, mixed with warm water to make a paste is far better for whitening socks - brush in the paste with a toothbrush, allow to dry and brush off excess

After you've cleaned your riding boots, spray them in a light coating of hair spray and put them in a pair of tights. Keeps them dust and bit free when they're in the car and the tights polish them when you pull them out. Makes your boots look great for showing :D

Great post :)

After washing bathroom tiles, buff them up with a cloth that has baby oil on.

Also used to use baby oil on Dixie's tail after washing it to make it nice and shiny :)

Potties from the pound shop make great cavaletti

Yes they do! I got a few last year and although a few people giggled when I turned up with them, after seeing them in action lots of the people went out to buy their own sets! :p:p

Can't think of anything 'odd' I use... Just try to buy 'human' versions where possible, e.g. Alberto Basalm shampoo; gardening buckets rather than 'special' horse ones; ordinary coat hooks for bridle hooks... Nothing unusual there!

**Pop socks with toe cut off and duct tape are great for securing feather while the farrier trims feet.

Tights with the toe cut off and one leg threaded into the other make a great tail bag for travelling - or in the stable - just add into the tail bandage.

Brush pot scourers make great brushes to wash lower legs when you get old and the joints no longer work - means I don't have to squat down!

** Not sure what they are called in UK - basically socks made from the same material as tights!

WD40 does indeed keep flies & midges at bay, brilliant stuff - however be very careful - it goes up like a tinderbox if near a naked flame (smokers take note!)
We use it as a 'wipe over' on the bikes before taking them out if going out on a summer evening as can then lean up near the bike at a rest sto & keep midge free.

I would never use it on a horse tho, but have wiped round the edge of the horsebox ramp area to keep biting things away in the past :)

You do get some strange looks in poundland, though, when you purchase ten potties!!
I use them for raised trot poles, rather than cavalletti as such.

Was thinking it's a plant pot but just realised it may be a baby potty ! Still can't visualise using it as cavaletti though :)

I got the poundshop potty tip on a thread on here last year. Genius :D Although I know some of the locals are intrigued as to why there's a little stack of potties in the corner of the field - I think they think I'm trying to toilet train the horses to save poo picking :D

Going to the other extreme of this, someone came on another forum I was on and was into S&M and wanted to know where they could get a riding whip from :D
