Got off the pony today and the greedy ****** decides to snatch his reins of me and decides to have a mouthful of hay with a nice mixture of horse hair (there was a pile after yard had been swept) which que me snatching his head up and growl at him for being naughty, and 2 minutes later he started chocking, me trying not too panic and vigourasly stroking bottom of neck to try and dislodge the hair that was ovbiously bugging him it was awful really hunching up his body! He stopped thank god and quickly got a bucket of water which he had a sip of, i didnt know what else there was for me to do?! I have really watered down his feed for tonight just to make sure! But what else is there for me to do if it were to happen again?! He is fine now happily grazing away!

Chokes happen. Sounds like you did the right thing and it wasn't too serious.

Another time you can try to pull offending material from his mouth before he swallows. If you don't make it you are quite right to start with trying to dislodge the lump by rubbing. You can also syringe water into his mouth to try to force the block down. If that doesn't work call the vet and go on to oil.

The vet once told me when I'd called him out to choke that the trick is to arrive quickly enough that the owner doesn't panic (or the horse die) but not so quick that the horse hasn't cleared the obstruction themsleves! But if you have had to resort to syringing then you might need antibiotics in case material or water has also been inhaled.

But most cases of mild choke resolve spontaneously.

Thankyou! Someone had literally just sweeped it up and he tought 'ooooo food' which is typical and i did try to get it out of his mputh but he still had his bit in which made me struggle trying to take of bridle at the same time!
