Went to Mum and Dads yesterday - the hunt had come round a few days before and said they would be passing on Boxing Day so they made sure their cats were in for the day and we looked forward to watching the hounds. I don't agree with hunting in principle as I don't agree with killing anything but I do appreciate the work the local hunt does with regards to sponsoring footpaths and hedges etc.
Anyway - mum and dad's garden backs on to the field. As we were feeding teh chickens at lunchtime we saw something jump into the metal feed bin so we closed it in and watched the hounds pass by. A few moments later the hunt master (?) came up to their garden gate and tried to open it but it's kept locked so he demanded it was opened as they wanted to follow the scent through the garden.
Mum said no and he starting having a go at her saying she was causing an obstruction. She said if he went back 100 metres there was a large gap in the hedge the tractors use and they could access the other field which runs along the garden and carry on that way.
Just then a hound jumped over the wall and mum asked him to remove his property - he refused so I shouted out to the hound and it very obligingly jumped back out. The master then said he was going to jump the wall so dad stood there with a shovel in his hands and refused to move.
My sister had called the police and they turned up a few moments later (rare for rural areas so not sure if they were expecting trouble) and asked the hunt to move on which they did.
Anyway - had a call from mum this morning all of her pots along the front of her house and the memorial statue to her best friend had all been smashed up and dog mess dumped in her drive. She lives in a little village in the middle of nowhere so it is very unlikey to be kids.
Saving the worse bit till last - when the hunt had gone we opened up the metal feed bin expecting to find a fox in there and we found the cat from over the lane!!
As I said at the start - I've always supported the hunt for their work etc but my opinion is fast reforming!

What a disgusting attitude. I have to say, I was out yesterday and our masters seemed nice enough but our locals have been round once or twice and they are arrogant b**gers (the red coats) and some of them do just think they can do whatever they want!

That's disappointng to hear, I don't know much about hunting etiqette but is there somewhere ur parents could write to express their disappointment at the hunt or is that not the 'done' thing?

We think they were chasing the cat - they have been reprimanded before for coming close to breaking the law. I'm not sure how hunting works since the ban tbh.

Normally one would complain to the Masters of the hunt - but sounds like it was a Master who behaved abominably, so I would be contacting Alastair Jackson, the Director of the MFHA, and kicking up merry hell!

I would write a letter of complaint in to the actual hunt - by the way which hunt was it?

Interesting...how did they come close to breaking the law?

once when we had some horses on the marsh the hunts man open the gate and went to gallop across the field, we had to scream at him that there was youngsters on there and he could not carry on in to the field, he wasnt happy with us at all.

It's a hunt in the Glos area - I don't want to say too much tbh as the police are currently involved abt the vandalism.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well to be honest its unlikely anything will come of it regarding the police.

Why didn't he carry on?

I would write a letter to the Hunt and forward a copy to the MFHA also, whether you are pro or anti, that kind of behaviour is unacceptable, the vandalism is seperate matter for the police to deal with. I would expect to have a written reply from the Hunt and MFHA within 7-10 days.
Very bad form if you ask me. As a pro, even I find it funny that it was the fox hiding in the bin

, and tbh I would of done the same thing

I have posted on here several times this year about our local hunts ( we get both because we are right on their borders) but we would never have trouble like that with them, they both respect it if you say please don't come on our land..
Poor cat, it must have been terrified. I bring our huge ginger male inside on hunt days, he looks far too like a fox to risk him..
I am shocked they attempted to come into your garden, and can only suggest buying a hunting whip and using it to keep the hounds away , they are obedient enough to move away from a whip used on the floor.
I rang our Master last time but he is so persuasive I almost ended up apologising for bothering him, he's without doubt their best asset...
A letter to H and H would bring a response but may also bring you more hassle. I would perhaps ask for a meeting with some of the hunt comittee and put your case to them. reading your post ther eis no way they could condone what's gone on, from the vandalism to the Master's behaviour.
I am speechless that they behaved like this to be honest, most hunts are doing their utmost to get the public on their side.. (as I drove out the other week our local one had a rider posted in our lane to turn the fox back so it wouldn't go on to our farm, as I had requested they try and avoid us if possible due to a couple of lame horses in the main herd).
Next time ensure you shut everything away (yes it p**es us off too as we have better things to do with our time) and make your garden fence unjumpable..
We now stand any we can with shoes on inside all day, decide we won't be scholing/doing anything with baby horses on those days , and as a last resort, join in...CCj went out Christmas Eve because there was no point in riding otherwise, the stallion adores hunting....

YO stopped the rest of the hunt from getting on the land and after giving him a few bad word and him back he went back. good knows what would or happened to the youngsters if they had all gone in

What disgusting behaviour!! Great advice above do take it further, Master of the hunt of not they are not above the law. I would be contemplaiting going for Public Affray against the hunts Master for his behavior to you all on your own property.

Disgraceful

We were more upset that firstly they appeared to be chasing a cat, and secondly the fact that if they went back 100 meters they could go into the field which runs along the garden and comes out at the top of the drive.
The hunt which passes the yard is lovely (not lovely enough to tempt me to join them tho
wink.gif
) It seems so silly that they had this attitude!! Surely they wouldn't want huge horses going through their garden? Muppets

You are aware that foxhounds do not hunt by 'sight' but by 'scent', cats don't leave a scent so are you infact certain that they were chasing the cat...seems unlikely.

SM, are you condoning this man's behaviour?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't know what his behaviour was, I wasn't there therefore I don't condone and I don't judge. I stick to facts and not assumptions.

As I understand it, cats leave a scent from their paws via their interdigital scent glands. Scratching is not just to leave a visable mark and remove old claw sheaths and streach back muscles, but also to deposit scent from these interdigital glands. Not all other species can interpret these scents though - so if a cats scent glands say 'piss off my property' a dog wouldn't understand the meaning though another cat would. Have no idea if a dog could smell the scent from these scent glands if a cat is just walking or running along and use it as a scent to follow. Also, since I can smell my cat (if I press my nose to her fur - best scent in the world0 I am sure that a hound with an infinatly better sense of smell than me can smell a cat.

His behaviour is as stated, (I am talking about when attempting to come into the garden, not the vandalism which is personal opinion of course)

If hounds had gone off of the trail and onto the scent of a fox then hounds would not mistake the scent of a fox for the scent of a cat - which wouldn't be very strong at all. The faster a fox gets the hotter it gets and the stronger the scent it leaves. For a start, I am yet to meet a cat that smells as strongly as a fox.
