I'm told that this year no hay sold at the big local auctions which made me think prices might drop (I wasnt in a position to buy myself as it usually sells in bulk to dealers so a big initial outlay)

However i cant find any! Its either shockingly expensive £6+ for a small bale or shockingly dusty/thistley! Also had several that ive had to throw much of the bale away due to mould or just generally festy smell.
I found a small 4 string heston (?) for £40 which is nice- is this a good price?
Then found rounds for £15 which almost made me cry with excitement, smells lovely not dusty.....horses will not touch it!? :-(
Currently have decided to turn out over night and bring in during the day to limit rubbish hay they eat (cant live out 24/7)

Is this a problem everywhere?

There is good hay to be had - though it commands a price! We have gorgeous small bale hay for £5 a bale collected. Yard we're on has ok but dusty large hestons which I believe are bought for around £60 (this could well be an inflated price though). They are fairly poor, but generally aren't full of the c**p like the ones they had last year.

Stow auction had all sorts of lot sizes available from quite alot of areas in the UK. If I had the storage this is the approach I would take as we are in horsey central and I think alot is being charged for crap quality hay.

What area are you in op - maybe someone can suggest a supplier worth trying?

Maybe the same area as you! - Bourton?
It was Stow i was told about nothing selling and needing to collect/buy huge amounts! Is that not the case?
Where do you get the little bales from?

I had a flick through the stow catalogue and there was more of a range than I had expected. There was more choice if you could collect and store a large amount, but some could be delivered and some of the amounts weren't massive - if you had some undercover storage then there were options.

We get our small bales from the Days in Greet, near Winchcombe. It is absolutly gorgeous stuff, absolute spun gold! It isn't cheap, but they are heavy bales and they simply don't grow or sell crap. We drive over an hour each way to collect a load!! Best to give them a call first - http://www.wheresbest.co.uk/venue/58786/M--R-Day/
