Just watched this again on TV, and cried again when Ginger died, and when Beauty was so skinny at the sales! Was my favourite book as a child, and probably still is today.
Was anyone else watching?

I can't bring myself to watch that film since i had a ginger lookalike horse cause that is just so sad lol i literally tear up thinking about poor ginger.

I wept buckets at the end too, when he can imagine that he's back in his first home and you don't know what happened to all his friends like Merrylegs (apart from Ginger...)

I like to think merrylegs lived out his days with the vicar and died in his sleep at the grand old age of 140.

A book that changed my life and why I can lead my horses out to die .
I can't watch the film or read the book now.
That last scene with Ginger is burned on my mind.

I always think of it fondly despite not being able to watch it now, cause when i found out i was moving to my house and it had stables and land, i was over the top excited because i was going to get a black beauty of my own. I remember my friend and me jumping around in circles screaming in excitment about it.

Got a fat old grey pony who was missold and only actually lived a year....and i never have got that black beauty...but i live in hope lol

I watched it with my nieces recently and cried buckets. Youngest kept saying "where's Ginger?"... "what happened to Ginger?"... heartbreaking. I'm not sure any of us will be repeating it anytime soon.

It is the bit where the 3 of them are in the paddock for the time together, and the bit where beauty finds Ginger. Always loved this story from when I was a young child, and still love it. Now we have a little Welsh c Black Beauty called Gemini. Nico is black he has a blaze not a star.

I'm lucky enough to have my own Black Beauty now, and that story always makes me think of how his life could have turned out, if I had decided he was too much effort for me, or given up on him (please note - I am not saying that all those who sell horses are giving up on them or can't be bothered!). He has been a challenging horse who has put me on the ground more times than I care to remember, and given me more grey hair than I care to look at, and I could easily see that a horse like him could be moved from pillar to post with no idea what was happening to him or why. I try to view life from his point of view. When other people say he is pathetic and needs to grow up for neighing when his two favorite field mates are taken out in the lorry for the day, I think about how emotional he was when his best friend was put to sleep in the field and taken away in a wagon and never came back, or his other great mate who was on loan to us and then went in a trailer back to his owners and never came back. How is he supposed to know that these two will come back? It always makes me think of Black Beauty and the helplessness of a horse's situation in life.

I can't watch it, and if my family want to torment me they only need put the music on youtube and I am off.
I have two wonderful copies that were my parents when they were children, fantastically illustrated and real works of art. I read a more mundane version.
Anna Sewell was an amazing lady.

Anna Sewell was amazing she set out within the confines placed on her by the time she was born in and her sex to effect change .
Sadly , mainly because she's a woman in my view to often the sentimental top level of the book is all that looked at IMV thats where she's really clever it's a sentimental story packing a huge covert punch .
Such a clever thing to do to hide her message in story so skilfully done .

My favourite book of all time. I've collected several copies.

I watched the film once and cried as soon as the music started which turned into convulsive sobs as the film progressed and pretty much didn't stop until it was finished.
My boyfriend at the time thought I was a nutter!

I've never been able to bring myself to watch it again.

I am really glad I am not the only one .
I can remember my horror as a child watching the scene in a film ( I think it was black and white )where BB sees GIngers body on the cart it is a feeling I can rember so clearly .
Damn it I am having snivel now.

I love the film and have probably seen it about 10 times now, but for me the music is even better. I'm always listening to the score on YouTube. Really beautiful.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a film version of the book!

The version of the book I had as a child was a Penguin (I think), and had occasional illustrations. The one defining illustration in the book was one of Ginger, in the back of a cart, her head hanging low and tongue lolling out... (what a marvelous illustration to put into a child's edition of I book, I thought!)

After reading the book many, many times; I was horrified to learn as an adult that a bearing rein is still used (check/overcheck rein?) in driving.

I love the film but it reduces me to a crying wreck, I will only watch it on my own it's to embarrassing otherwise it was on a while ago and that was the last time I watched it.

I love the film, but watching it last year made me sob my heart out and I vowed not to watch it again for a while.
I'm in tears just thinking about it now

I have never seen a bearing rien used in driving .
Do you think you might have a confusion between the third rien that is sometimes used when driving away inexperianced horses it sometimes called a check rien but that's not a bearing rien it does not prevent the horses lowering their heads .

I have seen it used in hackney driving, the horses do their show and when back in line the groom releases the bearing rein as it fixes their heads.
