Black Horse With Dapples?

I'm not very clued up on color variants and genetics, I'm afraid, so...

Is a black horse with dapples truly a black horse, or is it a very dark bay?

Hi...yes, my horse is black with dapples, you can see them in summer when the sun shines on his coat.
He is definately black, in winter his coat takes on an almost purple hue

Yep - My Friesian has dapples all over in summer (now in fact) Coal black in the winter but depending on the heat over summer can almost go dun. Odd horse. Glad he doesn't have a hairdresser. She'd never get his hi-lites right
