Arghh, I am taking my 'black' mare to the KWPN grading in a months time but I looked at her today and on her back she is so light! To the point where she looks bay!

She is living out 24/7 at the moment, but would the sun bleach her so much?

Also, she is black on her passport, would the kwpn wish to change her to bay if that is how she is currently looking? I wanted to have her tested for homozygous black in the future...

Yes the sun will bleach her, either put on a UV rug or turn her out over night only.

You can also feed her paprika or Black as Knight to improve the colour but both test under competition conditions (Capsicum)

She could actually be brown or dark bay. Trouble is the passports are done when they are foals and changing their coats. A friends foal was registered as chestnut (when the vet did the passport it was) however it's definately grey now.

She is black, her coat before all this sun etc was absolutely jet black... But she has been living out now since mid May and I don't have a fly sheet for her. She has been rugless pretty much the whole time.

My brown 3 year old has turned almost dun this year... he has never before been so light and has lived out every year since he was born!

The dark bay in my sig bleaches in the sun. At the moment he is ok cos hes in for 5 or 6 hours through the day but a couple of years ago he was out 24/7 and he ended up going dun :o

Yes, it's the sun. I think there's a fairly recent thread in Stable Yard about how to keep black horses black :)

Yes, my black horse is now an unattractive shade of ginger... I think to keep them black you have to keep them in a fly sheet all the time but I have ordered some black shampoo to try and make the black less orange...

I believe you wash them in dark vinegar/water and this stops them bleaching? according to a dressage rider with a stable of black horses.
