I'm planning on buying a new hat and show jacket just for dressage, but can't decide whether to go with black or navy? My horse is tri-coloured, so I've always thought black looks better on him (and of course goes with my black boots!) but then lots of female dressage riders seem to wear navy, so I'm not sure which to go with!

What are people's thoughts on black or navy for dressage?

I'm a massive navy fan - but not just from a horsey perspective (half my normal wardrobe is navy/bluey anyway!). What do you think suits you better as it sounds like the horse could work both!?? :D

Ladies traditionally wear navy, hence seeing lots of riders in navy.

I much much much prefer navy on ladies, with a cream stock, it is much less harsh & draining to the complexion than black!

Black boots are correct weather you wear black, navy or tweed.

ha -i vote tweed !!!!! lol. if i had to choose black or navy would prob go with navy - cream jods and stock

Sorry, I'm not an eventer ;) And I'm going to use my current jacket for show jumping, just want one for when we do some BD this winter.

So navy seems to be the correct wear for ladies, but I'm sure I've seen some some of the european women wearing black? Do you think navy still looks ok on a coloured horse though?

Thanks

I am going to go against the flow and say black especially for a tri coloured, just thinking it will look smarter overall. I have worn tweed and navy and mostly recently black for dressage on my grey horse and the black one definitely looked better in the photos (and we won so now I have to wear it all the time because it is officially the 'lucky jacket' along with spotty socks I had on!)

you will get lots of people who think that navy is correct for ladies and that it looks nicer/less harsh. When I got my jacket I didn't know that there was such bias towards navy as i had been out of competition for years and personally thought it looked smarter especially as my horse in very dark bay/black.

Personally don't think me wearing black looks bad, think its smart and suits horse more than navy would.

However if I was to replace/upgrade i would be tempted to go for navy as i feel the peer pressure lol!

i'm not an eventer either!!! just like tweed!!! I am going to affiliate and will still wear my tweed. dont care if only one

i wear my tweed jacket for everything. i have a black one too, except it doesn't fit as well as the tweed one, and it goes nicely with AJ. i don't event, but i want to! lol

Navy looks smarter I think, prefer it for everything SJ and hunting.

Navy jackets with your whites (breaches, stock, shirt, gloves) and team up black jackets lack with creams instead I think.

For BD women should wear a white shirt, white stock, white gloves, navy jacket, white jods and long black boots with a navy hat (although the hat colour dosent matter too much).
