Why would I feed these?

I've noticed that a few of you do, and that they are increasing available in horsey places.

Not that I have noticed. I'm feeding 25 horses of all ages from 7 months right up to 21 years old and they all look fantastic and none have become silly. I feed mine alongside soaked oats.....although right now the temperatures here too cold to soak them so they are being fed dry.

Patches has about 2/3 of a top spec feed measuring beaker. My smaller ponies have about half a cup.

They absolutely love them. I've not noticed any change in temperament either. A sack of sunflower seeds is just over £8 in my feed merchants and lasts me, for four, three months!

I think they have a similar structure to nuts to be honest.

Here is what I found on their make-up -

"High-protein food, with more protein than the grains. Rich in minerals; iron and zinc are plentiful. The high amount of oil in sunflower seeds as polyunsaturated fats, essential linoleic acid, and vitamin E. They are about 25 percent protein, have a good fibre content, and are rich in the B vitamins also, particularly in thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, and pantothenic acid. With their high potassium and low sodium and with zinc, iron, and calcium all at good levels, sunflower seeds are a very mineral-rich food. The vitamin D that gets stored in these sun-filled seeds helps the utilisation of calcium. Copper, manganese, and phosphorus levels are also relatively high; they are lower in magnesium than in calcium, which is different from other seeds. "

So long as he likes them (haven't met a horse yet who doesn't) then you will notice a difference! Feet, coat and body condition improves dramatically over just a few weeks.

Good luck - hope he likes them.

I have fed these for at least a year following one of Tia's ever helpful posts.

My boys have lovely coats and their feet are in great condition. I feed a big mug a day between two feeds. They have them just chucked in the feed bucket along with their other feed stuff.

Has not made them fat or daft.

One side effect, I have the odd seedling growing up through a gap between the rubber mat and the wall and a few on the muckheap which one day I will pot on.

Although I now use SS products, I still keep on with the BSS.
