I've always been told you should have brown on a chestnut but I'm struggling to find a second hand 16.5" dressage saddle in brown. Would you go for black?
I have a chestnut and he is in black tack and IMO he looks just fine, I think it's personal choice what colour tack you have I've no idea though if it has any bearing on competing.
it's a personal choice.
unless you want to do high-level showing I wouldn't worry too much about it
I personally prefer black tack no matter what colour my horse is
I did prefer brown on my old mare, however like you i struggled to find a brown saddle when she needed a new one so swapped to black, think she looked fine.
I do prefer brown, but after a struggle to find a saddle that fitted when we eventually found one that happend to be black I didn't care.
So she is now sporting a black saddle and brown bridle........I really must get a new black bridle!
I think they look great in either and as someone else said unless you want to do top level showing it really does not matter.
I like brown tack but when i got my boy i decided that black would look fab on him. I think that unless you need it for showing then black if fine plus for dressage black seems to be the norm. To be fair once your butt is in the saddle you cant see that much of it, well thats the case with me!
i prefer brown on chestnuts too, but as it's not that easy finding brown dressage saddles and if they do make them, many have to be made to order or ordered in, i can never be bothered to wait, so now my chestnut has black tack, which is fine by me! if he was doing showing though i would definitely put him in brown tack.
I prefer the look of black tack on bright chestnuts (despite knowing black is horrid and nasty and should never be used ) It definately is hard to get a nice brown dressage saddle- most people go for black- I did on my chestnut.
My two chestnuts both have black tack and it looks fine on both, one is a bright chestnut and the other's liver. I love brown tack but can never be bothered to match saddles with bridles as brown comes in so many shades!
They look fine in black. I have 2 red boys my old boy pre-retirment was in black and my 7yo is in brown. Both look smart Although I got a much better deal on bridles in brown (various shades) as black is more popular
If a black saddle fits both you and your horse best - then buy it for that reason alone - after all when you're sitting in it how much can you actually see?
