Started yesterday... Swollen legs all of a sudden and for no reason.
Called my vet who is now assisted by my lovely friend (recently graduated as equine vet) who rides my boy when I can't and is crazy about him.

All symptoms indicated Pyroplasmosis (very frequent here) and she gave him Carbeziat + Oxcytetracyclin (sp) after telling me to keep a close eye on him as she was called away on another emergency...

10 minutes after she had left , my boy started having spasms with squirting diarrhea, kicking his belly with his hind legs as he was in such pain, pawing, lying down, pawing again, etc... I felt so helpless

So called her to let her know and she said "coming right back as soon as this colic I'm treating is under control..."

2 hours later she's back, my boy is exhausted but the diarrhea fits are over.
She gave him 2 more shots of Calmagine and Finadine and he slowly got back to being himself again: A fussy old poop begging for attention and carrots

But friend has to rush back to the colicky mare who is back pawing on the other side side of town

Will have the blood test results tomorrow and know for sure about the Pyro.
A few more shots in the next few days though

A couple of pics of him as - I swear !- in 11 years we've had him this is the very first time i've caught him lying down in his box... So took him with my cell phone (hence very poor quality)

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is Pyroplasmosis? I've never come across it but perhaps it not something we have in the UK (is it a warm country problem?).

For the lucky ones who don't know Piroplasmosis (probably because there isn't any in your part of the world):
Caused by 2 protozoans which parasitize red blood cells and are transmitted by ticks.
Clinical signs associated with destruction of red blood cells include fever, anemia, weakness and sometimes edema.
The only treatment on horses - Carbeziat- is very effective but really shakes them up, poor things.

We live in the rather warm and humid south, so loads of ticks (HATE THEM

Up north, piroplasmosis is hardly heard of. None of it in the U.S. (horses have to test free of piro before being imported)

Will update on blood test if HHO lets me...

I know, saw that as well... They've just started lifting the quarantine over there.
Hopefully won't spread to the whole country. That thing is a plague for horses.

Most horses infected down here where it becomes chronic. It just stays in their system and horses can never be rid of it.
 
Really hope your boy is better soon, I live in fear of tick fever as well, SW France, there was a deer running past the stable yesterday, like to see them, but dont like what they have(ticks)

Oh poor boy. I hope he's on the mend very soon. You feel very helpless when faced with this sort of thing. I hope it's not something that global warming will bring closer to us here in the UK. (The forum was impossible to get on last night, I gave up after 20 minutes of getting stuck, and logging in and out of it, and I'm in the south of England!). Keep us updated on your gorgeous boy.

Poor BE. Hope he is OK. I learned about Piroplasmosis when I was in France with my dog, as she picked up a huge tick, and there were scary information leaflets in the vets that sent me into a state of panic - no one mentions the risk from ticks when you take your dogs to Europe (at least they didn't then, which was a few years ago).

Well she was all right, but I learned that I should have been using Frontline on her before I went to France not Stronghold, as Frontline kills ticks and Stronghold doesn't. Just a tip for anyone taking their dog to Europe.
