What is the difference between a blacksmith & a farrier? Our man is a Blacksmith? (his wording). He does make his own shoes & ours are always hot shod. Thoughts please?
Dont know but i thought Blacksmiths made Gates and things?? My son is an apprentice farrier and he makes shoes but i have never heard him refer to himself as a blacksmith??
Blacksmiths make other things apart from shoes I think. Farriers only deal with beasites. I imagine your blacksmith must be a farrier as well or he couldn't legally shoe your horse? I'm not clear but I think it's something like this.
I just googled this and from what I could see it is that the farrier shoes horses while the blacksmith can make them properly alongside many other things to do with ironwork such as making gates
but a blacksmith is not a farrier, perhaps you should check that he is registered on the frc website
in all the time i have been shoeing no one has even asked if i am registered (he should have a blue sticker (the colour changes every year) on his van/truck window)
please make sure you do this as the owner is held accountable if the have been using someone who is not registered.
also is he older? because he may be a farrier and still calling himself a farrier (they used to be one and the same thing many years ago but then they were split
