I've been looking after my nans jack x Chihuahua for the last few weeks as she's been in hospital. He's had ongoing issues with blood in his urine for a while (always strained to go, infections/blood reoccurring the last 6 months or so) hes around 3 or 4 years old now. He also always has had problems pooing, almost always constipated. Starting to wonder if they are connected.

We took him to the vets 10 days ago. Given hes had the infections so regularly vet prescribed a longer course of antibiotics and told us to come back for xrays/scans if no improvement. If anything its stayed the same.

Taking him back in today, he's essentially incontinent at the mo and I really do think there are bigger issues at work here but has anyone had similar problems?

He's an odd looking dog with weird proportions, bad x breed, he was rescued rather than bought before anyone jumps on me .. but given hes already got problems with his legs (due in for an op soon) has breathing difficulties, is it too far of a stretch to imagine his urinary/bowel systems are similarly odd?

Obviously hes under vet investigations just curious to see if anyone else has had similar problems?

No it may be physical...my dog had a short urethra and a very open bladder neck as revealed in a scan.
He also had his sheath removed as a very young pup so it was basically a recipe for frequent infections.

Saw a very cool op of bladder stones being removed from a dog last week. Has the vet scanned for stones?

Can you check the purine levels of his food? Any chance there's dally in his heritage? Although it's not just dallies who are affected. Feeding raw eliminates the purine issue for the most part.

Recurring infections go hand in hand with different stones to the form Dalmations get. Have they run a urine sample yet?
