My horse has been diagnosed with bladder stones and they are fairly big and I have a few questions. The vet has said that because he's happy and not in discomfort, they can be left and he can carry on normally. A different vet said that he should only walk from now on and be very careful.

Don't the stones cause discomfort when he's moving? I don't want to carry on normally if they do! He usually has blood in his urine after our rides if we trot or go out for a longer hack. Is this caused by the stones moving in his bladder? The yard owner said it was because he had an infection, which is now supposed to be gone, but if that's so, why does he still have blood in his urine?

Thanks, that page is very helpful! No diet change suggestions have been made and some treatment has been offered. He has offered medication but it's such a big quantity and very salty and the operation may not suit him as we don't know if or how quickly the stones will return. Also he would have to be separated from one of his friends who he's very attached to and they would both be distressed, so the overall stress may not be worth it if he is happy with calm exercise. It is the yard owner's decision in the end as I just look after him and she owns him - just trying to see if I can help in any way!
