Just out of interest, why do you pay for a clip? Sorry to high jack the post a little, but it's dead easy to clip. I think that sometimes people get worried about doing it, but trust me it's easy
Why not have a go yourself?
I don't have my own clippers and so always have to ask to borrow some form someone, but then I just pay for the blades to be sharpened every few times I use them and make sure i'm very careful with them.
I'm just thinking, because I clipped my horse for the fourth time this year so far last night, and if i'd paid the same each time for her blanket clip, i'd have shelled out £140 so far!
I paid £20 for my boys blanket clip, he's 16hh if that makes any difference.
FizzyBB - you have a point, but it's just never occurred to me to shell out for the clippers and have a go.. easier to just hand over the £20 when it needs doing... plus I would probably do it wonky!
I wouldn't lend my clippers to anyone, have done in the past and they came back broken on two events so it won't happen again. I clipped 'professionally' for years, haven't this year as the cost of fuel, clipper sharpening, my time etc just made it not worth my while any more. I did take a great pride in my clipping, straight lines etc when I did it so they got their moneys worth - generally they were mad horses anyway hence why they phoned me! I took between £30 and £40 for a blanket clip, free travel if within 15 miles and I was there as long as it took.
NB I'm sure all those folk who clip like I did would agree that a clean horse makes the job much easier, saves blades and your poor horse! sometimes I had horses where it was like plowing a field they were so clarty under the top surface!
I totally agree that not all horses are easy to clip (believe my, I've owned a horse that turned into a devil at the sight of the clipper box!), but what I meant was that the act of clipping, is dead easy.
My friend always used to remind me not to worry about it not being perfect, because as she rightly pointed out, you only ever see one side at a time
Can't help it though, couldn't not have nice straight lines LOL!
I should also say I did take less for second/third clips unless it was changing from a blanket to a full - although my full clips where generally around the same price as I could rattle on with them not caring about lines!
I charge the same for a blanket clip as a full clip (£30) as it is takes just as long because of all of the lines.
Agree about having a clean horse, a cob I did the other day was so grubby underneath the top hair that I used two batteries and a new set of blades up on him - filthy beast!! it was like ploughing lol!
i charge 35 for a part clip! (blades, machines, PAT testing ,servicing, insurance, time, travelling oil etc included!!!!!!) ist 2nd third clip irrelevant as the coat has grown, the horse has changed weight and lines have to be sorted and straight!! (oph and the spots!! and endless hairy clothes to be washed and dried!!!!)

I actually haven't paid for a clip for quite a few years - and usually do my horse myself. However, the yard I recently moved to had someone comming to clip who does the most beautiful job (far better than me in every way), so thought 'What the hell'.
Going to get her back in a fortnight to re-clip. (Oh and I'm a lazy bugger

Few people will lend out their clippers (understandabley!), so if you are only clipping once a year it is worth paying someone else to get covered in itchy hair!
Now that clipping on our yard has gone up to £40 I have bought my own clippers as my yak needs doing 2-3 times a year.
BTW just looking at your signature pics - I was at the show that the left hand side pic was taken at
Oh were you! That was our first show just after I bought madam at the beginning of this year. So were were taking it steady and getting to know each other
I wasn't overly impressed with the venue tbh, the lady on the tannoy was obsessed with picking up poo in the collecting ring! Gosh, I know that it needs doing, but she didn't give anyone a chance to dismount and pick it up, or find their helper, before she started hollering over the tannoy and refusing to let the next competitor in to the ring until it was done!

We were there with OHs horse - it was a long day if I recall correctly as the classes were so full.
The organiser is always like that
it gets a bit wearing at times, and does put me off going there if there is an alternative to go to as she can be so stroppy about it.
