Blazers wood pellets

Yes I wet them for the initial bed then put a dry bag in to top it up because that's what other people said to do but it didn't work for me. The pellets took ages to break down and it made it really hard to muck out; I used to sieve the bed every so often to get the small bits of muck out and I lost loads of the pellets in the process! I found it much better to wet the pellets every time I added a bag.

I use blazers - last winter was the first time i've ever been on pellets so nothing to compare it to, but so far i've been blown away by how much cleaner and easier my horse is to muck out on them. They do go a bit dark, which if you're use to a pristine white shavings bed (or other types of more expensive pellets from what i've heard) is not too attractive, but i don't consider it to be a massive flaw as my horse is so disgusting he can turn a shavings bed red overnight. We buy them as we have a biomass boiler on site and it works out cheaper to bulk buy for both the boiler and the bedding.
When I start a bed I lay 5/6 bags and wet them slightly (I don't like them to expand fully, and prefer when they still look a bit pellety) then when i top it up i just put in a bag dry. I have banks of shavings as it looks a bit nicer, and if I want it to look a bit lighter i sprinkle a layer of shavings over the pellets. Another lady on my yard has a full shavings bed, but lays a couple of bags of dry pellets under his pee patch and she loves it, says its so much easier to muck out and just like a giant cat litter tray lol. I think if you're used to having light coloured beds they may not be for you, but if you're not too bothered how dark it is then they're fab.

ETA if you're literally 'sieving' the bed to get every single bit of poo out then yes, you will lose pellets if you're not wetting them fully. You can buy the forks with prongs that are closer together than normal shavings forks, but i've always used a regular fork and then hand picked through the top layer. you shouldn't be losing pellets if using a regular shavings fork as the tines are too far apart.
