My large coblet had an abscess finally emerge on the coronary band a couple of days ago, after being in agony for 3 weeks. My question is that it started to weep blood yesterday, trickling down the hoof wall. I have spoken to my vet who said it was unusual but can happen. Has anyone had a similar occurence and what do you reccomend please?
Do I contunue to poultice, and does he need antibiotic cover? My vet thought probably not.
Many thanks.

I would have thought it a pretty natural reaction to something bursting out of the skin, and would be inclined to follow your vets advice.

Ensure that you keep the area clean, bathing daily in warm salt water. But if you become at all concerned that further infection is setting in your vet will need to look and possibly then give AB cover.

The farrier saw him yesterday before it started bleeding and was happy the way things were going now that it had burst. Of course I will listen to my vets advise; I was only wondering if anyone had had experience of a bleeder? I have been in the horse industry well over 50 years now and seen most things, but never this before. Thanks for looking and writing.
