Ok looking for some help or advice please...

My horse had a new set of shoes on yesterday and when my farrier rasped one his front feet it started to bleed around the inner edge (where the shoe sits). My farrier said this is likely because his feet are soft due to the wet weather and muddy conditions (his field is very wet and muddy and he does stand in the mud when waiting to come in)?

Tried to research this on the internet but kinda drew a blank.... He is not lame nor sore (before or after shoeing) just wondered if anyone else has ever experienced anything like this before?

I have seen a remedial farrier take too much foot off in one sitting (what I think is too much foot but I am not a remedial farrier!). The hoof was very pink and red in places. But I've never actually seen blood. It may be that your horse is very lame today if that is the case. Is he?

Hard to say without seeing them but was it sort of little dots and staining? To me that would indicate damage due to some sort of dietary overload even if the horse is not lame - farriers can poo poo these marks as they see it all the time but to me they come as an early indicator of trouble. Have you had any worries about laminitis in the past?

Trotted him up this morning and he is sound. Left him stabled today as didnt want him standing around in the mud.

He had laminitis nearly two years ago, has since lost loads of weight and is on strict diet/grazing etc and worked 6 days out of 7. Did wonder if it could be something to do with this, maybe something that has been there a while and has now grown out?

My friend was there when he was shod and she said it was quite a lot of blood (although may have looked worse...) so definately not a trickle.
Thought could be brusing or an abcess that had come out but would have thought he would have showed signs of lameness?

Oozing blood shouldn't happen. Was it exposing red staining in the wall or sole?
The vascular (veins and arteries) parts of the hoof surround the pedal bone closely.

Are you certain it was actually bleeding? Or was it just fresh looking blood being revealed? Was it at the toe, or all the way around?

It is possible for the farrier to trim too close to the circumflex artery and so cause bleeding (if the hoof is very weak), but I doubt the horse would be sound after this.

Otherwise, bruising causes bleeding into the laminae, and when rasped the blood will appear fresh, as whilst in the hoof capsule it cannot oxidise. But this blood will not flow. The bruising would have occurred about 9 months ago.

I don't know of any other causes for bleeding... maybe someone on here such as LucyPriory would know more?

Hard to say with out seeing.

But this happend to a horse i brought, had him shod next day feet bled (fronts only) farrier said he had lami. Vet came and confirmed. (Said horse was sound)

But that was my experince it could be somthing entirely different! As other posters have said bruising etc.

If your really concerned i would have the vet out for a look
