I've had my new horse just over 10 weeks and everything started off really well (though we had problems cantering in the arena, presumed it was because he had hunted in Ireland most his life. He also seemed quite worried when being schooled) About 6 weeks into owning him I went away for a week. When I came back he was like a different horse to ride. He is fine in walk but trot he was hollowing, avoiding contact by throwing his head and running into canter which was disunited and hoppy and he couldn't maintain it. He then started throwing his head right down in the canter. I had his back checked and got the all clear. I have also now bought a new saddle (yet to try it on him). My last hope was his teeth and the vet has since removed a blind wolf tooth. This was only 4 days ago so haven't been able to get back on or try new saddle but I'm wondering if anyone else has experience of blind wolf teeth and can tell me if his problems will improve following its extraction!

I would guess that any discomfort in his mouth would certainly have impacted on his ridden behaviour, but I have no experience of blind wolf teeth, sorry. Other things to consider:

Was he ridden or otherwise worked whilst you were away for that week?
Has his diet or turnout routine been altered etc?
How are his feet?

Good luck.

His diet and routine were the same and his feet not long done. He's a real genuine horse and hasn't tried to ditch me or anything like that so I know it's not just him playing up.

My gelding has blind wolf teeth which vet said not to worry about as he doesn't seem affected by them when ridden - just out of interest what bit are you using?
