When putting the bridle on my horse today I noticed he had 3 blisters/ulcers on the inside his upper lip at the front. Can anyone enlighten me as to what these may be? I first thought they may have been caused by fertiliser as the fields were done a few weeks ago, or maybe his teeth? I've made an appointment for the dentist to come. They don't seem to be bothering him, I was thinking of putting Bonjela on them. What do people think?

Thanks for your comments. I've had him three months and he was in poor condition when I got him. After lots of tlc, topline and alpha beet he's just starting to look ok but I expect he could still be a bit run down.
I've had problems getting my dentist but he's definitely coming next week so he might have an idea.
I'll have a look out for buttercups, I think there are a few in the field but don't think there's that many.
I'm off to hunt down my Bonjela now, I'm sure he'll love the taste.

Hi my friends horse had these one year, looked like little craters on the inside of his lips. We put it down to brambley type plants after seeing him eating them, we did managed to fine an equine ulcer cream, i cant remember the exact name but pretty sure it was made by Equus.

It could also be bot fly larvae emerging, one of my horses had a really weird circular ulcer and this is what the vet thought it was.

Definitely buttercups. I have 6yo who gets the same ulcers for about 2 - 3 weeks each year, always co-inciding with buttercups appearing (this year's ulcers have just turned the corner and are beginning to heal nicely now). We don't have that many buttercups either, but obviously enough to affect this particular horse (although none of my other 4 are affected).

About 3 years ago I had a hair sample of his tested, and the result did show a positive reaction to Buttercups.
