My Mare has had a couple of small nose bleeds over the past couple of weeks, so last night I called the vet and hes coming at lunch time today to take a blood sample to do a clotting test.
Im really woried thats its going to be bad, has enyone else experienced this? Or is it just a routine check?

Thanks
Steph.

If hes doing a blood clotting test is he checking for haemophilia? Not 100% sure but I thought that it was a genetic disorder carried on the X chromosome therefore only males can show the sypmtoms (but females are the carriers) therefore it would be unlikely for your mare to have it. There may be other disorders that mean the blood doesnt clot correctly however.
Just found this on the H&H website you might find it helpful! Hope it goes ok with the vet, would be interested to know what they say!

I wouldn't worry too much untill you know what the problem is. Nosebleeds can be caused by a wide range of things, but the majority can be treated successfully if diagnosed early.

I would ask your vet to scope the horses upper respiratory tract including the guttural pouches. If your horse has not got any other signs of a clotting disorder (bruising, small bleeds evident on the gums, prolonged bleeding from wounds) I wouldn't worry too much that that is the cause.

Try not to worry, but make sure your vet does his/her best to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.

Update on abbey,

the vet came out yesterday to look at her, he took some blood and is goin to send it off for testing. he also times how long her blood took to clot, and it wasnt normal it took quite a while longer than it should have done so theres obviously somthing not right!

he gave her an injection of vitamin K i think it was anyway, he checked her heart and look up her nose and in her mouth and couldnt see anything abnormal. so its just a waiting game now until the results of the blood comes back which should be saturday morning, and then go from there? il keep you all updated.

Thanks for all the help and reasurance x
