Blood Hounding

the clean boot!

Sorry??

Was just wondering about this as my daughter and i love to watch the hounds and would love to go when baby pony is a little older and better behaved! but have never seen blood hounds and she mentioned her friends had gone this week- Is it not the wrong time of year?

Cant click on the link for some reason, but thank you

Hound exercise/cubbing is beginning to start now. Bloodhounds are quick so you need to be very fit. I used to go hound exercise and hunting with the Farmers Bloodhounds and loved every minute of it. Far more running and jumping than straight fox hunting.

Farmers Bloodhounds started hound exercise a couple of weeks ago.
Brief description. Like normal hunting except you jump 'lines' set over varying distances with jumps that tend to get meatier as the day progresses. Hounds follow a scent left by some nutter who prefers running to riding :)

bloodhounds trail a scent laid by a human runner! no animal killed/hunted. they follow lines with a break between each line to give horses/hounds a breather! bloodhounding is fast and can involve big jumping. hound exercise is more laid back and happens in the autumn until the opening meet approx mid to end of Oct

ah Ok Thanks- this is the one i can speak about in front of my sister then ;-)

Sorry i know nothing about any sort of hunting bar the fact we like to go and follow

A lot of Hunts have Children's meets which are very low key and very educational. Might be worth contacting your local hunt for info.

Went once with our local bloodhounds...once was enough & wont be going again. Certainly not for the faint hearted, novices or young horses. I felt they had no regard to any nervous or novice riders who were with them, especially as the time i went was aimed at exactly these sort of people (& no im not a novice or nervous). I certainly wouldnt recommend them, but in saying that they may be better in different areas of the country.

My old boss used to go as he said it was better than normal hunting as you knew you would always get a good days jumping without lots of hanging around plus there was always a really good tea afterwards!

It helps if you know the area as some meets were known as serious jumping days (mega hedges etc), some standard hunting type fences and others that I think were even called non-jumping days as they only did small fences.

If you know your local Bloodhound pack give the Secretary a ring and they will advise you.

Not with my local bloodhounds! I had never hunted before and it was great fun , nothing mad or furious and all jumps were optional. Me and my very green haffy had an excellent time.

I don't think they "lay" a scent ... don't they just run for their lives? At our local pack they definitely just run - these hounds are amazing, they sniff and the air and you're off ... Quite fast and furious -- but in my experience very friendly! Usually easy enough to get a sense for the type of meet before going.

Bloodhounds, as has been said, follow a runner. It is called the 'clean boot'. He runs around the area they are hunting in and then the huntsman gives the hounds a whiff of his socks or whatever and they go after him. It will be fast on a good scenting day, slower on a bad. When they catch the man they juymp on him and lick him to death.

Anyone read Willie Poole's books? The time he had those bloodhounds...so funny.
