Blood in urine, very worried

Jerry has blood in his urine, I noticed yesterday when he went, there was blood mixed in, and the urine was very dark not at all normal, he didn't seem in discomfort at all. Put him in and rang the vet to see what she thought, she said that blood in horses urine is not at all common. She asked me to try and get a sample and bring it in today to be tested (fortunately they can test stuff at the clinic) she is going in specially to do it.

She wanted me to check him regularly for signs of colic etc, which I did throughout the night, but he seemed OK, just very quiet. He didn't pee at all last night, other than a tiny bit when I first put him in (which I managed to collect for testing) and just isn't himself. I just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this sort of thing, as it is very new to me, and getting a little worried about him.

very worrying time for you .i,d be inclined to think liver or kidneys but dont really have a clue . could be a simple uti ,is he drinking more or less than normal?is he showing any signs of discomfort ? try adding something to water to encorage him to drink and help flush out infection.

Id put him straight on a precautionary course of antibiotics and get a blood test done.

vet is ringing me in few hours with results of the tests, and supose she will then want a blood test as well

Haven't ever dealt seen this personally but I know someone who has and it was a kidney infection.

Vet took one look at the sample and said she wanted him in tomorrow. She has tested it, and wants to scan him, and get a sample from in his bladder. She said she is very concerned, as it was such an abnormal sample

He is on hourly checks again, as she is so unsure about what it is.

A friend's quite old pony got a kidney infection and he used to have blood in his urine - it was a chronic thing but it did clear up and he was very bright most of the time. Come on, chin up

It's awful when they are ill and you can't do anything except wait.

I have had a personal experience with a guarded to hopeless prognosis and a spontaneous recovery.

if its not too dark where you are you could take him for a walk give you something to do anyway and he might pick at a bit of grass.good luck

A friend's horse has blood in his urine, it turned out to be a bladder stone which he had to have removed. Apparently stones are extremely rare in horses so I wouldn't worry about anything serious like that, probably just an infection if he's a bit down in the dumps as well. Hope he's all better soon x

I'll pray for you! I hope everything turns out ok for you! How old is your horse? My 28 year old mare had colic really bad one time. We had the vet come out and he took care of everything. She was fine then. I noticed the next day that she wasn't acting like herself. I assumed colic again. We got some enemas and instead of solid manure, it was a blood type mixture. She ended up having a perferated bowel, a tear in her intestines. If I were you, I would ask my vet if something that that can happen in the bladder. Good luck!!

MadH - is there any way at all that horsey-o could have eaten ragwort at some point, even if it was long before you got him? I'm going through some similar agonies with a rescued mare who appears to have blood in her urine and she has dreadful liver damage due to ragwort poisoning. Got everything crossed for you that it is a simple UTI xxx

Since Ive had him he hasnt eaten ragwort, but Ive only had him since Feb this year, before that who knows
