My TB injured her leg around a month ago and although the swelling went down and she seems sound, the veins running down the inside of her back legs seem to become engored with blood and swell sometimes. I have been told this is called blood spavin but don't seem to be able to find much info about it. Does anyone know anything about it? Much appreciated!

Blood spavin is a distention of the veins in the area of the tarsus, often caused by the swelling of a bog spavin putting pressure on the veins so that they don't drain properly. A Bog spavin is caused by an excess in synovial fluid or thickened synovial tissue.

To be honest I haven't covered this yet so not sure, bog spavins don't tend to make horses too lame like bone spavins do. Has a vet seen her? What have they told you to do? Is she on box rest or being exercised etc? What was her previous injury?

Off internet site:

BLOOD SPAVIN
This is similar to bog spavin but more extended, and generally involves the front, inside and outside of the joint, giving it a rounded appearance. The swelling is soft and fluctuating. Young horses and colts, especially if driven or worked hard, are more liable to have this form of spavin than older horses.
