The vet called me a while ago with the blood results.
He had a huge infection, the normal blood count thing is 5 thousand, his was 50 thousand. Vet said nothing we could have done would have saved him as it was so massive.
Ingested from something eaten or drank probably over the last few days (most likely the water).
Will have to wait for stool results in a few days to find out exactly what it was.
It is a relief to know that we could have done no more for him.

Rachel was feeling bad because the last Sunday they had been swimming, she felt it had caused it, so it is a relief for her to know also.

Today, the lorry man waited for us to come and say goodbye and cut a precious lock of mane. Rachel was very ok, she said it didn't seem real and it wasn't him, just a body. She is very brave. Lorry man then took him to his last journey.

After a very sleepless night, full of anger and the usual guilt, it has been an ok day. We have spent all day with Tracy and Rachel has been helping out with the horses.
Many thanks to tracy for letting us borrow a horse for company for Herbie and for Rachel to ride, for as long as we need.
Rachel will have another pony, I have told her to let me know when she is ready. We may even have a youngster from the same breeders and have a half brother (or sister) to Phantom. She enjoyed working with him and brought him on to the fine animal he was, she is to be very proud of what she achieved.

Thank you for all the lovely messages here and privately. I will reply later, have only just got in, and now am off to field to see Herbie and friend. It is a comfort to read them all, and we both thank you

Oh what a shame, at least Rachel knows it was in no way her fault. Shes being so brave, I dont think I could have coped so well. It would be lovely if she got a half brother or sister to Phantom, although that will obviously be the last think on her mind right now xx

HUGE hugs coming to you and your daughter.
Its nice to know that Tracy has let you have a horse to keep Herbie company.

My thoughts are with you at this hard time.
xx

Just keep an eye on your daughter the shock may not have hit her yet and may come out at the strangest of time, something may remind her of a happy day with him or the saddest day with him.I know you will be there for her.
HUGS

Thanks.
It helps me to write, even very soon afterwards, it is therapeutic. Rachel isn't sure of how to deal with it, so life carried on. But we talk about memories and funny things that have happened, and she is ok doing that.

Being around horses helps her, and doing the chores at the field for Herbie and friend, gives her something to focus on.

Thanks everyone x

at least you are getting some answers as to why ,lost my mare last year which i had as a child there are some days still when things make me think of her and have a cry but it does get easyer my thoughts are with you both x

Oh my word, I had no idea, just read your other posts and am in tears, can't imagine how you or poor rachel must feel. How awful, I am so, so sorry, thoughts are with you

Thanks for updating us Jane at this terrible time. You must be so proud of Rachel.

Just my own opinion and personal experience - but the sooner you get her a new pony to get her teeth into the better.

Thinking of you.

We are considering it. Rachel would love a part of him and we may find out about a brother or sister....
