Just had our second phone call in 4 days from the people that live opposite our field saying the cows next door have got in again.
On Thursday night 5 cows got in, they pushed the fence down and walked through the electric fence. Luckily I know the farmers son so a quick phone call got him and a friend up and they, after a bit of trouble got the cows back. We patched up the fence with electric tape and all was fine.
Moved horses to that field yesterday, and this evening another phone call saying the cows are back in with the horses. Mad panic as I don't want Hattie running about, get there and only 2 cows this time. Phoned farmers son again and he sent his dad (who deals with the young cows) and as soon as they see his landy go straight back through the fence. So now both sides are electrified and we put a make shift post and rail up. Next weekend dad is post and railing it properly so hopefully it won't happen again.
 
We used to have the same problem. I was told that cows only respect barbed wire so maybe have a word with the farmer and ask him to put some on his side of the post and rail fencing.
 
Sorry didn't put in the first post. The fence is barbed wire, thats why I put electric fence inside it for our horses, fields are rented. The cows walked through the barbed wire but it is old and rusty. Was talking to the farmer about it, he is going to repair the barbed wire and hopefully with our rails the other side they won't get through.
 
Tis very annoying. Though is the first year they have done it and we have been neighbours for 12 years.
 
At my old yard the woman kept sheep in the yard, they were so annoying too, would try and nick the horses feed. She kept goats too and the 2 billy goats would rear up at the horses.

Can you not talk nicely to the farmer for him to put up a better fence?

My mae (the black horse in my pic) is terrified of cows, they are in the field beside the one shes in. If they come near the fence she takes off at a mad gallop, head up in the air and snorts. Only time she goes faster than a trot!!
 
Farmer is going to redo the barbed wire on his side, as said before its the only thing cows respect. And we are going to post and rail our side. I've wanted to do it for years, but could never get dad to do it. But now have a good reason to get him to do it.
