My poor boy had a freak accident yesterday and ended up getting stuck in a cattle grid. He went right in and got stuck. He got 2 legs out but 2 legs, off fore and near hind were well and truely stuck so he panicked as you would expect. I was next to him within 30 seconds of it happening and the vet was with us in 15 minutes. They were the longest 15 minutes of my life trying to keep him still and stop him from struggling :( He did panic a couple of times and was throwing himself around so much we just had to get out of the way, I'm pretty black and blue today as well. The vet managed to sedate him and 4 of us managed to get his feet free and drag him away from the grid, and let him come round slowly. He got to his feet rather shakily and we got him back to the stable. He was and still is most sore on his near hind as he was sort of hanging from this at times as it was the one stuck nearest the middle of the grid.
After a very long night of checking him he was a bit brighter this morning so I have cleaned him up, luckily his feathers seem to have protected his legs from any cuts. He was taken a big chunk out of his chin and bitten through his lips in a couple of places.
I had a good poke round tonight to try and get to the bottom of the lameness in his hind leg. It seems to be around the hip area, very unhappy with me prodding about there and there is no heat or swelling on is actual leg at all. He is dosed up on Danilon and I've had him on box rest today other than a couple of small walks round the field just so he doesn't seize up. The vet checked him over last night and said nothing was broken but didn't check further up. I'm really really hoping he hasn't got a hip or pelvic fracture. He can put a bit of weight on the leg but it is obviously hurting, although he did seem able to walk it off a bit when I lead him out.
I'm not going to panic just yet as he is bound to be sore as its only 24 hours later but if it is still as bad on Monday then the vet will be out.
Healing vibes if you don't mind, but any experiences of anything similar will be appreciated...sorry its a bit long but I'm a bit worried about the poor boy :(

Oh how terrible for both of you, I do hope he is feeling better in few days, We have a cattle grid just 200 yds from our yard entrance and we all hope none of ours ever get loose and go that way(entrance to posh country house)
Heeling vibes sent with all my best wishes to you both.

How awful, poor lad. It must have been absolutely terrifying for both of you. So glad you got him out. Poor chap with his bitten lips. I expect he is shocked as well. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

How awful! That's one of my nightmares.

I really hope that he makes a speedy recovery. :)

I once saw photos of a horse that had been stuck in a cattle grid and it was a total mess. It really sounds like your horse was very lucky.

*healing vibes*

Don t panic too much my dads pointer got all four legs down a cattle grid when out hunting was stuck down for four hours and they had to cut the grid then pull him out with a tractor on to boards slide then get him up after sedation vet wanted to put down during this my dad refused.

His legs were like nothing you have ever seen there was no flesh on them at all you could see tendons and bone and muscle the vets were not optomistic this horse went on to heal and be fully sound and actually race again.

We still have him he is in his twenties and still being ridden and hunted it is truly amazing what they can come through if you can nurse them through it.

Thank you everyone, your comments are making me feel better  It could have been a lot worse. I think its only because he has go legs like tree trunks that nothing broke. It is only the day after too so hopefully he will be a bit less sore in a couple of days :)

Loads of healing vibes. It is a worrying and lonely time when they aren't right isn't it? My horse is just better after colic at New Year which seemed to take an age for him to get over and I felt so so stressed during his recovery, just wishing so hard he would show signs of improvement. Don't get too worried yet, that must have been such an ordeal for you both and I am sure that he will be feeling sore, stiff, bruised and generally a bit sorry for himself for a while yet.

Thank you, you are so right. I've been worried sick. Sometimes you don't realise QUITE how much they mean to you til something like this happens and you very nearly lose them. He was feeling a bit better today, although I've got him dosed up to the eyeballs on bute he was moving better and seemed a bit happier in himself. I knew he was feeling better tonight when I went to give him a cuddle and he pulled his usual 'honestly, do you really have to do that' face :)
I hope your horse is feeling better and you are back to having fun together
