Bloody hooligan dog!

Stan is officially a hooligan. So named by all the othr doggy folks at our local park, as yesterday he shouted at every dog there, including doggy friends he has known since he was a pupster.

He just makes a lot of noise, terrier style, until the other dog moves away from him. He's not biting, but it's not particularly pleasant for anyone. And obviously we have to really watch him that he doesn't do it to a dog that won't take kindly to being shouted at by a terrierist!

I don't know what to do next to deal with this. He spent 4 days with his breeder and her 25 dogs a few days ago and was fine there - happy as larry and no trouble. He can co-exist with other dogs fine on walks as long as they don't get too close/get on top of him. He does agility but they're all under control there so it's never an issue.

I've tried telling him off when he does it, I've tried greeting other dogs before he does, I've tried ignoring the behaviour but moving him firmly out of the situation, I've tried sending him to his breeder for intensive socialisation.

I'm thinking of arming myself with a water pistol to aim at him when he's being gobby? any thoughts? or other things i could try?
 
Kids scream at each other and make irritating noises all the time, that bothers me more than a dog barking :p

You could try the water pistol, I might have to resort to this myself, the pup does yell at some dogs but not others, but then again there are certain situations in which I want him to bark so I don't want to put him off completely.
At the moment if he is barking stupidly I just very firmly remove him from the situation. Or if he is with a dog I trust, like my friend's puppy who is a female a bit younger but who is built like a brick outhouse, I just let her bitch-slap him :o
 
We're lucky that the people at our park aren't too worried by him - they've known him since he was tiny (and was everyone's best friend!) so are very forgiving - and slightly amused. Hoping it might be a phase?! He's definitely a grumpy teenager. But he's a little star in so many other ways, perfect with people, patient with kids, 100% on recall etc. so I can't be too annoyed with him!

I might invest in a water pistol...a water spray has been very effective with him when he barks at our front door....hmmmm...

any other ideas folks?
 
no - that's a thought. Might look into that - doggy school round the corner sells them and the school owner's book (which I've read cover to cover - excellent book) talks about using the discs.
We can totally avoid these situations with his ball - he will ignore everything else going on around him and just 100% focus on the ball which helps. Just a shame as it means he's not interacting with other doggies.
 
I would give my left leg (and possibly the right one too!!)to have Dex so focused on a ball that he ignored other dogs|!!! Count your blessings!! :)
