Tess had a little bit of spring grass ( just a smidge) and she was down with colic after having her tea tonight. Not sure if it pushed her over the edge but wont be giving her a night feed if she is as been on some what good grass.

Been walking her around for the past hour on and off  Worried out of my minds, i also have a bladder infection style thing at the moment so was bursting for a wee. ! Mum and dad are throwing a party so she really chose the right time

Had to stop and rush in for a wee, prior to this Tess was down groaning, moanin was about to call emergency vet out, went back down to the field with vets number on speed dial to find her up, about eating had a drink and looking sparky and fine... I WAS GONE 5 MINUTES :eek:

Checked on her every 10 minutes since and she is fine.... Tess you are a Cob pull your act together ;)

Oh how scary! I hope you are both better in the morning.

Defo was :( she is rather poor looking at the moment ribby, Dolly is taking a lot out of her so she is still on hard feed but clearly it isn't doing her much good :(

Thank you lovely they are both out on a bare part of the field with a soaked haynet so she can walk about.

Sorry to hear that TB, I have to be very careful with Liv and introduce the grass really slowly. Once settled on it she is fine but until then I don't sleep a great deal. Keep an eye on her. Has the magic poo arrived? Gut sounds? Gas?

Don't take any advice from VFS lady grey/Dunroamin/BarneyandBuzz!

Aw Tess is the same and it was a teenie strip but miss piggy gobbled it right to the bloomin' root ! She has pood twice since, first was a abit runny but second was more normal looking. She is gurgling still and im doing half an hour checks ... Horses are so vulnerable for such big animals

Oh ... Thank you for the heads up :)

For anyone wondering... VFS Lady Grey started a thread and then forgot to sign into her new account and replied to the thread as BarneyandBuzz (then tried to cover it up with an 'ooopps wrong thread' :). Sorry to hijack TB but it's worth knowing that the horrid girl has a new account.

I've got a pony that had a couple of bouts of mild colic so I've put her on Happy Tummy charcoal which I had for my big mare who had colitis and it seems to have really helped the pony. I give it to all my horses when they chane field or when the spring grass is coming through and they all seem to cope much better so it might be worth considering using something like this or a probiotic. Hope she's ok.

Did she have a bit of colic recently? As well as this I mean? It may be worth putting her on a mare and youngstock mix..it will help replace what Dolly sucks out of her. Also will give Dolly what she needs if she pinches any. I really hope Tess is ok, that must have been very worrying x

I agree, get her on a good mare and youngstock feed. Feeding a foal takes so much more out of a mare than many realise, and if I remember birth date correctly dolly is about at highest consumption just now.

Plenty, and I mean plenty, of grass is usually enough at this time of year, but if you have to watch Tessy's intake of the green stuff then she will need it replacing with a high quality feed. General course mix will not be enough for them.

I won't recommend a brand as we all have our own preference, but I would get her on a specialist mare and youngstock feed of good quality quickly. (Introduce a little at a time over 4 or 5 days until up to recommended amount)

I'm guessing worming is up to date with both of them.

She'll need a feed for mare and youngstock as it has much higher protein levels which is what she really needs. You may get away with a stud balancer and grass (if you can introduce her to good grass slowly) but otherwise a stud mix / cubes would be best.
She needs more feeding now than when she was pregnant.

Glad to hear she's improved - maybe just had a bit of gas?

Thank you everyone both up to date with worming :) will look into changing her feed. She is fine this morning both happily mooching about

The proper nutrients will be good for her, eg she can get colic symptoms if her calcium levels fall.

I've probably missed earlier posts, so forgive me if I have, but why is she not allowed any grass?

Grass is good for lactating mares and supplies lots of nutrients for her and little one.

I can totally understand introducing grass slowly to reduce the chances of colic, but not leaving it out of her diet all together, especially as she is losing weight. Grass will help her to keep her weight on now she is nursing. x

The mare is allowed grass and is on grass, I think she had gotten into some longer, lusher grass which gave her a bad tummy!

I never said she wasn't on grass ?? She is being strip grazed and we opened up a new strip slowly que colic ! We're not stupid !!! :)
