my project horse that was meant to be coming for the summer to do dressage is now lame. bloody typical. not sure if he's coming now- depends upon why he is lame i guess. i'm rather disappointed now- was actually looking forward to getting out and about

yeah hopefully. i think he is a bit prone to abcesses and things like that (he gets thrush really easily) so hopefully something like that rather than problems with tendons or ligaments

so you wont be able to compete? do you have your own horse as well or not?

I know horses get lame... not sure of all the causes though! do all horses get lame at some stage or not? any suggestions on things to do to avoid it? sorry for sounding so numb! x

he's lovely. 16.3, DWB- bright bay, 4 white socks, big white blaze. not going to make the grade as a professionals SJer but moves really nicely so i've been roped in to dressage him (i'm in no way shape or form a dressage expert but i think i'm the only person who does dressage half competently that they know!

well yes i have my own but one horse just mainly does hacking and the other is only just broken in so won't be out competing til the end of the season...
they go lame for a HUGE number of reasons- its similar to people really- if you train/do exercise you will be prone to injuries but then some people NEVER get them and some people do. horses can go lame because they pull or jar something or maybe haven't been warmed up or cooled down properly. they can also pull things in the field or their conformation might make them more prone to lameness. plus they can get abcesses and problems in their feet. its a bloody minefield!

Or they can go lame like mine with a bruise then you find out they've "incidentally" got spavin in both hocks which is making them lame because they've been stood in all week to rest the bruised front foot

Or like my Welshy, they can go lame because they've done too much and pulled something. Or like other horses I've known, they can go lame for no apparent reason at all, just to keep us interested...

Remind me again why we do this?!
