Out on a hack today, get to a lovely big sandy area where I can have a bit of a canter. Suddenly kalief surges forwards and starts bucking and kicking.

I look round and there's this retriever chasing him and trying to bite him. So I yell 'whose fing dog is that?' whilst trying to steady him and sit to his bucks. My OH is yelling at the dog and I eventually stop after k has kicked the dog.

Bloody owner eventually calls the dog back and do I get an apology? Do I hell. So I yell again 'a sorry wouldn't go amiss!' and he sort of mumbled at me.

I swear some people simply should not be allows a dog as they are clearly incapable of training it. We have a malamute and she doesn't go off the lead as her recall is awful. So she is walked on a lungeline. Sensible.

God, I am still so angry. Sorry rant over and as it is a Saturday night, glass or two of a fine chilled Chablis!

I am with you on this one - it drives me nuts! I have a 4yr old who I trying to train and bring up slowly and our biggest menace is people who don't fence their dogs in when we are hacking, so we go past houses and people's dogs start chasing at snapping at her. Someone even yelled at me when my mare kicked out at her dog as it was trying to bite her back legs - put it this way it was the first time I have ever used such language at another individual!!!!

I have eleven dogs so think I can consider myself a dog lover. But some dog owners are so irresponsible it drives me crazy. At one point along our hack a dog almost always leaps from its garden and chases the horses. I've tried to speak to the owner several times but she insists the dog is 'only protecting his property' and doesn't seem to understand that the roadway is PUBLIC property and that her dog is presenting a danger to itself as well as the horses and riders. Said dog was recently kicked by a horse and has been slightly better behaved.

Makes me laff at how the the fluffy slipper little dogs with 2" stumpy legs come running at you barking, I had one last week, I mean the horse is HOW BIG, I normally tell the owner to take the batteries out

I am glad you were OK, it is so dangerous. I get this regularly in the woods where I hack and have devised a system that seems to deal with the problem; namely, I take my hunting whip with me and if a loose dog runs towards us I turn to face it and chase/shout at it with the whip, which they hate. You wouldn't believe the rows I have had with the idiot owners over my pro active approach!

Horses know the difference between the curious friendly ones, the gobby ones that need a warning, and the really nasty ones that will bite - and they behave accordingly.

Today I had a floppy, friendly, blithely curious basset hound round the boys legs and he just stood still and touched noses - but he has lashed out at a gypo's dog who came in silent with his gums showing...accurate too - that one was out for the count.

This is one of my major hates out hacking. My mare used to be fine with dogs but the hacking routes around my new yard meet so many loose, out of control dogs that she's really nervous around them now. One particualar owner is really rude and mouthy too, swearing and shouting at the top of her voice which further upsets my poor mare.

stinkyminkymoo , I had a similar rant on here now so long ago , but i was cycling when i was jumped all over by dogs that were off lead and were not coming to the walkers call , like everyone else says if a dog doesnt recall then most responsible ppl dont let it off lead , love ur lunge line do lead, that is very sensible .

and dogstar , i have had to chase dogs before to get them to back off , and owners dont like that do they , and they dont like when their poor dog gets kicked from ur horse, as their dog is biting ur horses legs !!

makes me so mad, and besides it being plain rude , it is dangerous , as our horses can unseat us when trying to get away from an attacking or chasing dog .

I can promise k is good with dogs, our mal often comes in the school and 'plays' with k. She is just over a year old and chases and barks at him and he ignores her occasionally kicking out at her but never making contact, it seems to be more of an 'oi I'm working here' than anything.

In this case the dog tried to bite him and I think it upset him. I am pretty sure he kicked it as my OH said it fell on the floor. What did it's owner do? Sweet FA. Urgh.

I wish I had actually gone over and had words with him but I was so angry I probably would have booted him in the head!
