Afternoon all,

Well I have had my boy three months now and when i got him it was clear to see he had at some point had a blown abcess. Its now growing out nicely but we are getting closer to the shoe so what happens when its time for him to be shod and this 'deformity' is in the way? (for want of a better word, sorry my chair just broke, lol)

Ask your farrier. The chunk outlined by the abscess exit will be a weak area of wall and may well break out/off at some point. I've no personal idea how this affects shoeing except that nailing/banging nearby will speed up the breakout..

my mare had the exact same thing. It grew down then when it was an inch before touching the ground just broke away leaving a big gap. She's barefoot so didn't have to worry about keeping a shoe on but she wasn't lame at all on it and had no problems working with it. Your farrier might trim it away if it looks like it's going to break and add some filler to help keep the shoe on?
