Hiya, just a few questions about feed balancers. Does anyone use them?
I've been looking at Blue chip and Top spec and just wondered how long does a bag usually last you? Do you have to use the feed alone or mix it with another? As they are quite expensive. Also are they worth using on my 'normal' horse? As on their websites the before and after pictures are of horses in very poor condition. Is there any that you can reccomend? thanks guys!! xxxxxxxxxxxx

I am currently feeding Top Spec, with chop and a cup of general mix my 4 year old looks fab, i was using Blue Chip but somebody advised it was high in yeast dont know if this is true and the effect this would have but I have checked the ingredients of both bags and they are very similar TS is a couple of pounds cheaper, not that this matters, a bag general lasts us 4-5 weeks, but i must say everybody comments on how fantastic and healthy he looks and he is very well behaved. Hope this helps ....

I feed Top Spec light to my 3 year old NF pony. I only feed him half the recommended daily rate as he's a typical good doer native and I feed it on it's own, it's a just a small token feed for him but his coat is lovely and his feet are very good too. A bag lasts ages. I really rate it and Top Spec in general as a company.

A sack of Topspec lasts me about a month I think - I have two 13.2hs eating a 3/4 ration each day.

I mix it with Alfa A, but my OH feeds his TB it straight in summer, mixed with SpeediBeet/Conditioning Flakes/Alfa A Oil in winter.

Mine both look fantastic, everyone comments on the 2yr olds mega shiney coat.

I feed TS Comp. In the Winter, she gets 2 mugs a day, with Alfa A and speedi-beet. In the summer, she gets a mug a day, with a scant handful of chop and some Cal Mag.

She gets it to keep the feet in good condition, and make sure she's not short of anything essential. She looks good, the coat is shiney and she's full of beans.... :D

I use Top Spec Comprehensive with all 3 of mine. They all live out with good natural shelter on good grass. I mix it with dengie light. Big lad 16.2h TB has 3 mugs, little lad 15h TB xQH 20 months old has 2 cups and old girlie 14h connie x arab has 1 cup. I will increase this to full rations for her and the little one in the winter. If they need it they can have speedie beet too. They all look well and have lovely coats and calm natures. It is very cost effective as they do not need any other supliments or hard feed. Obviously if grass is poor they have ad lib hay.

Why would you be worried about the amount of yeast?

I fed my two Top Spec over the winter, I have 2 large horses and so a bag would only last me 2 weeks, so was costing me £60/month. It did improve their condition slightly.

However I have recently changed the feed for the younger one to Allen & Page Calm & Condition mixed with Alfa-A Oil and cut out the Top Spec - and in the last 2 weeks he has put on an amazing amount of condition, and looks better than he has since I got him last year. It's not the grass doing this as they haven't got any.

I use Baileys Lo Cal.

Mine get 1 mug twice a day with a bit of Alfa oil.
The 2 boys have just that as they are not doing more than 32k (20 miles) endurance at the moment.

The 2 Arab mares have the above plus Baileys Outshine and after working hard some endurance mix. They are both doing 80k (50 miles) and above in a day plus race rides of 100k (60 miles) and above.

My little new Forest mare gets 1 mug divided into 2 plus a tiny bit of alfa oil so she can have her herbs and flex (Joint powders).

My Arabs do up to 160k (100 miles)in a day on 2 mugs of Lo cal plus outshine and a little endurance mix.

I have found both Blue Chip (expensive) and Top Spec not suitable. 1 of my Arabs ended up with mud fever when on TS.

Hi, I use Top Spec feed balancer, two mugs a day, to my 16hh porky eventer, and that is all she gets. She competes on average once every three weeks. I have compared the Top Spec like for like in nutrional value etc with all the other top brands and it comes out on top every time. It is expensive, but value for money imo, and because it is pellets I dont feel mean about it being her only feed :)
