I recently had to sell my pony as he was hopelessly outgrown- I then moved to boarding school.
I shared a horse at the weekends but that didn't work out as the girl originally wanted a few days in the week done but reluctantly agreed for me to have him weekends but then someone else came forward who could do her days.
There are hardly any shares or loans around us so my dad suggested buying a horse, keeping him on full livery during the week then doing DIY til Friday to Sunday night and during holidays.
Is this possible? And is it selfish? I really want to compete etc. but most sharers want to do that bit themselves.
So basically is it selfish to keep a horse like this? I just hate being at boarding school for this reason- I miss owning horses so much and I really want to compete this summer.

Any replies are so so appreciated!!

Lucky girl!

If your parents are prepared for the outlay it sounds as though it would be a perfect solution. It might take you a little longer to build a bond but it should be perfectly doable.

You will, no doubt, get some flack from people for not always doing him yourself but there are plenty of people who just turn up and ride. My own daughter left the house before 7am and was rarely back much before 6pm whilst she was at school, once she'd eaten and done her homework there was little time to do anything with the horses so she really only saw them at weekends.

Good luck

As long as the horse is well looked after during the week I don't think there is a problem.

Would they exercise during the week so the horse would be kept fit enough for you to compete at weekends? Could you cope not seeing your horse during the week?

jemima*askin - haha I know- thank god for understanding parents! I could understand if anyone thought it was stuck up but I can't do anything else atm and horses are my life! The bond will hard to establish I know:) thanks for helping

Fallenrose- I would get a full livery package with exercise included and that's the thing haha:/ I just know that all week ill be thinking of my horse. Luckily my school is half an hour from home so in free periods it may be possible to visit sometimes during the week

Zigzag- steyning grammar school- they have no horse links. In fact I've hardly found any fellow horse riders and the ones I have are in the day school go to riding schools

Well we used to keep a pony for a girl who went to Cheltenham ladies college, she was boarding, we kept the pony fit during the week and she rode sat and Sunday (didn't get out of school till Sat lunchtime, she had a great bond with her pony and went to pony club all school holidays etc

We have a horse on our yard who is on full livery all week and his owner comes down on friday night for the weekend as she is at school in London during the week. Horse is competed during the holidays and some weekends, and is exercised during the week - he is a very happy and settled boy! When she's on holiday she spends pretty much all day at the yard and has a blast with him.

Yes, its perfectly possible. I went to boarding school, my horses were kept on my livery yard at home and we paid for someone else to look after them (alongside my parents) but essentially they were on full livery. My trainer would ride the one i competed a few times a week and i would ride one of the days at the weekend and compete on the other (generally).

I ride for a family who's daughters are at boarding school. They ride at weekends and holidays, have lots of lessons and compete successfully.

The horses all know who their "mum" is - I don't exist when they're home aha!

Get them to send you to Queen Ethelburga's School.
They cater for your ponies/horses as well as being a boarding school.

Read about it when I was young and decided that it sounded like heaven on earth.:)

Do what I did and bargain with your parents

My brother went to boarding school and I stayed home and went to day school and had my horse and pony instead :)

Al has a similar set up, with a gang of ponies. When the kids are about, the ponies really couldn't care less- the kids are the nice ones who take them to parties and stuff them with polos. Al is the person who makes them work properly!

It works out well all round- she goes up twice a week to school them, they get hacked out in the other days and the children come home in sports periods/ exeats to ride and compete :)
