We have a French friend visiting with her nearly 6yo daughter who is pony mad. Bobby is normally really well behaved so I was quite happy to offer a little ride on lead rein up & down a couple of farm tracks. Except a whole series of events meant it didn't turn out as planned.
The horses at our place are kept in 2 groups but sales etc have meant that there was 6 in one group & 2 in the other. One of the 2 is prone to laminitis & is back on box rest this week. As his field mate was getting stressed on his own we were asked to swap our 2 to the other group, so they are a bit unsettled.
Then yesterday the farmer put a gas gun in the field we were going to walk past - right by the track (It's not a bridlepath, just a farm track) so I decided just to walk up & down the lane a little way. Got Bob out of the field & he whipped round to try & get back in, I fell over & he went charging up & down the lane trying to find a way back in. Cue for all the others to charge up & down their fields yelling. Caught Bobby & got Pickle out to to stop her yelling. So I decided just to walk up & down the paddock behind the farm house - but that joins on to their old field (with lots of bushes between) . Walked up the paddock fine, but as we walked back the old field mates saw him & started calling. He whipped round and cantered with me hanging on, trying to keep little girl on & trying to work out how to say "hold the saddle & push your bum down" in French (they never cover the useful phrases at school LOL). When we stopped I thought she would be in tears, but she loved it.
I should have said "he is naughty today, you can't ride" but they are going back tomorrow & she has been looking forward to this for weeks.
Ponies are worse than kids for showing you up.
