How many of you wear Body Protectors when XC schooling?

Just a thought as I went last night with my YO and two others, and I had a real purler of a fall, being catapulted from a 16.2 horse into the ditch element of the coffin, I have ended up pretty battered and broken, but if it were not for my BP I would have certainly broken my ribs.

Amusingly, I was the only one wearing a BP.....so good that it was me, but I was suprised that my fellow riders did not wear a BP.

Aslo, does anyone know how well a point 2 would have worked in that type of fall; would it have saved me from deep bruising that I have now?

I thought it was compulsary to wear a BP when XC schooling? Certainly the courses I go to locally all insist you have one on...

I always wear one, it's only compulsory if you go with an orgainisation such as a PC or RC otherwise in my experiences it is entirely optional!

I am the same. I definately wouldnt school without it.

I wear one when schooling not because I think I might fall off (although imho everytime you get on a horse that is a real possibility!) but because I like to train in what I compete in so that I can get used to the feel and work out if there are any issues with the tack/equipment rather than finding out in competition and too late

Think it's better to be safe than sorry though isn't it so for that reason I wear mine

Hope you are feeling less battered soon, landing in ditches is less than fun!

I have been to many a xc course where you dont have to, and people I have worked with have been "ooh look at you getting your BP out for schooling" but at the end of the day its not such a chore to wear it and with the antics tink can chuck in xc schooling i'll be wearing mine!!

Oh poor you, how sore. Yes, that is just the type of fall that the Point 2 would really help. The jury is out as to whether it would save your life if the horse turned over on top of you but there is absolutely no doubt at all that is would have provided a lot of cushioning & a little bit of neck support in a fall like the one you had.

Hope you recover quickly.

Every xc course i have been to have rules stating ALL riders must have a body protector on. Sounds like you were lucky - hope u feel better soon x

Ouch, hope you're not too sore this morning.

I always wear my BP when XC schooling, I think most courses will demand it of you, but obviously some folk will be more complacent if it's their own private fences. The risks are the same as when out competing really, so seems daft not to!

The bruise on my hip is very impressive - its so dark its almost black! What a war wound!

Doc says I may have a craked rib too, which explains the pain when I take a deep breath. Nothing they can do though, so carry on, although I may well not ride till Friday now!

Interstingly its my neck which is sore too, I have limited 'range' of it now - and thats a good thing if the point 2 provides some support from that persepctive.

Have not looked at the BP, but I am so very glad I put it on, despite the heat!

Is this not a no brainer??? surely schooling xc is as dangersous as competing of not more so, especially if its a go as you please.

Anyway I bought the Kan body protector because Kerry from Middleton Equestrian Centre swears that it saved her from a serious spinal injury http://www.middletonequestrian.co.uk/archivenews/teamapolloapr2009.pdf
I looked at them at Badminton this year and the demo that I saw convinced me – the Kan foam was hit with a hammer it didn’t dent at all compared with the softer foams which couldn’t absorb the same impact and I felt the hit more sharply on the softer foams. Also the other foams are soft so if you should land on stones, tree roots or poles on the ground you will feel them quite distinctly and I was told that the motorcycle foam actually hardens on impact. Actually it is really easy to see how it protects so well. I know that the Kan is getting really good testimonials - Jeanette Brakewell and Nicola Wilson wear them

I heard that the point 2 didn’t inflate for a rider at Bramham who fell at the water - so no extra help there,
