Hi,

I'm looking for a proper sweet itch rug - with the tight weave fabric, as pony seems to be getting bitten through his derby house fly rug. Vet has recommended a Boett but I'm just checking out all my options as Boetts are £££!

Any feedback good or bad would be most welcome on the boett, rambo hoody or the snuggy bug body - pony is a chunky boy with a big neck and big mane (which I'd like to keep!). He's also getting bitten between his back legs and in the "armpits" of his front legs so something that might help with that area would be good.

Thanks

:)

My boy wore a Boett, it was the only thing that allowed him to keep his mane and tail and stopped him scratching. They're pricey but last forever, fit so well (they take all your horses measurements and keep them on record etc) and loads of spare bits are included - they are very tough and durable, I never needed to use any spare pieces for him. Really recommend them, they cover most of the horse! A lot of people swear by the rambo sweetitch hoodie so maybe use that first & move up to the boett if not enough - I didn't use them as I wasn't sure if they'd cover enough of him but could be worth a try x

I LOVE the Snuggy Bug Body.

They special made a tiny sized rug in a 3'3". It was delivered very quickly and has lasted 2 summers so far without even looking like its been used (apart from the dirt!). Highly recommend it.

Wouldn't think the Rambo Hoody would cover enough to be honest as it is just like a standard fly rug but thicker whereas the Snuggy has a tail wrap, large belly cover and really snug around the areas the flies/midges can get in.

*Just seen that they are on sale at the moment as well inc. the sweet itch sets!!*

My boett lasted 3 weeks and was wreaked beyond repair plus was a right pain to put on.
Rambo sweetitch hoody is brill, and wouldn't use anything else.

No experience of those I'm afraid but my sweet itchy boy does brilliantly in a Hy guardian. Cost about £50 and a great buy!

Thanks all, concerns about the Rambo not providing enough coverage echo my own worries about getting one - especially as he's very bitten at the moment around his "armpits" and stifle.

Just seen that the snuggy bug body's are on offer at the moment - very tempting to try one as £99 vs £200 for a boett is a big difference!

Agree with this, after 10 very expensive years with Boetts for our two we now have Rambos. Much tougher and a nice deep rug, I always spray the underbits twice a day with repellant or skin so soft.

I would never go back to Boetts now, my boys always seemed to be too hot in them and although we have electric fencing they always seemed to rip them. I never put the ears through the holes on the Rambo, the neck stays in place anyway.

I used the rambo hoody for years, and found it brill, although recently brought the premier equine equivalent - its more roomy round the neck and has a longer tail flap. Both the sweet itch ponies on my yard wear the P E ones now.

We had a boett for years. I especially liked it because it fitted in the washing machine, and could be sewn with a normal sewing machine, (only needed to once in 4/5 years). The pony never seemed too hot in it and it polished his coat in the summer. We sprayed the uncovered bits with Cooper's Fly stuff.
Expensive, but it worked.

Sweet itch hoody for me, more durable than the boett which lasted less than a year and was stitched up many many times. I use a daily fly repellant and a sweet itch cream on the exposed bits

I like the boetts but foud them to be a little on the expensive side, we now have an equitech sweet itch rug- exactly the same as the boett but a fraction of the cost! My little shetty loves his!!! Wouldn't be without it!!! And he is worst case scenario for sweet itch!!!

Unless you start your horse wearing the Boett BEFORE the SI season starts, I found that they tear very easily at the slightest bit of scratching.(mine lasted 3 weeks!).

The Rambo SI rug is very strong and mine is in its third year. I have been looking at the Premier Equine ones as they now do a belly cover for them.

Also Tri-tech 14 spray is brilliant against midges. I have actually taken off the SI rug because the spray seems to work so well!

My Boett lasted about two months and didn't fit my boy at all despite being the correct size for him - the neck didn't extend all the way down his neck and would pull back and rub him, the withers rubbed him, the buckles on each side got rubbed off within weeks tearing the fabric causing big holes, other holes cropped up, the leg straps rubbed him and he resented me putting it on him. Eventually I sold it on here to someone who fixed it up for their own horse, and bought a much cheaper sweet itch rug which he loves. I would never ever buy one again (still cringe when I think how much money was wasted on that thing) and given how much he was rubbed and how quickly it tore and buckles came off then I could not recommend it at all.

My friend has bought the Snuggyhoods one at £99 and it has been revolutionary. Her filly was getting bitten to death in a normal fly sheet. The Snuggyhoods one has stopped this entirely and it moves really nicely with the horse, no more rubs on her shoulders

Rambo sweet itch hoody for me, excellent rug my mare has a mane and tail this year.Love it I'm going to get another one next year so when one is in the wash she can still have one on.

Agree with Juliette - very pleased with Snuggy Bug Body. Comfy for horse and proyects from horse flies and midges. My mare was the only horse not twitching in the field the other night. Note though that Snuggy have a sweet itch rug and hood as well as the bug body so check out both on their website. They offer a good - and cheap - repair service as well.
