Amber has a confirmed bog spavin. She is having an x-ray next week to check for bone fragments.

Has anyones horse had an operation to remove bone fragments and how long was recovery?

Amber is lame on her leg, will this settle down or will she always be lame (if there are no bone fragments?).

Regards

Sorry to hear about Amber.

A horse on our yard had two small fragments of bone removed from the inside of his hock which swelled to the size of a large grapefruit.

He went to Willersley and was under Sven Colt, who is renouned all over Europe. He was there for 10 days, had 3 months box rest and was turned away for a short time.

He did his first ever dressage competition last November and got 64% ! He is doing his second comp this Sunday.

He will get arthritis at some stage in his life, but for now he can jump, fun ride, school etc.

Good luck with Amber.

If it's just bog spavin (fluid swelling) then she should come sound after some rest and can go back to moderate work although nothing too strenuous, i.e. big jumping, galloping, as that would make it worse. If it's bone spavin though then more guarded prognosis but can be treated fairly successfully, but again no hard work after and will need more rest. Good luck, hope she's ok.
