Hello :)

A friend of mine's horse has what looks to be a bog spavin on her nearside hock (well, my instructor pointed it out to her) and suggested using udder mint on it to reduce inflammation, along with rest/light work.

The udder mint has given her some kind of skin reaction (similar to dermatitis) so that's been crossed off the list.

I know nothing about these so please help - I believe she is getting the vet out but any lotions/potions to help and management advice and experiences?

Thanks xxx

How old is said horse? what is it used for?

They used to be considered 'just a blemish' but nowadays are considered a symptom of a tauma to the joint or an underlying problem such as arthritis, bone chips, ligament damage etc. The bodies way of dealing with the above is to provide fluid to the area to help protect it. If the thing causing the iirritation isn't removed or treated, the swelling tends not to go away.

If the horse has had it a long time the chances of it going away are slim. However you could try rest and bute.

My boy had one apear when he was about 18 months old. His has gone down but strangely apears when he is stabled - so it's like filling of the legs but not as far down as usual. He isn't lame.
