Hi, I am new to owning/buying and would value your views on whether I should buy a pony that has a 'very small' bog spavin found at vetting. Flexion tests / small circles etc were fine and the vet said that the pony is sound & it is unlikely to cause a problem unless we want to show it - which we don't. The pony is for my daughter as a PC pony - she will also do local unaffiliated jumping and have fun around a few cross country courses, take it to the beach etc. The vet said that it would probably not affect insurance but inevitably I have looked online and seen the worst & am not so sure. Reality is that it's a nice little pony, but I don't want to buy a vet bill. We have been loaning this pony for a while and it is safe, sane, does the job, DD fallen in love etc.... What do you think? PS it is a 13 year old grey & also has a single melanoma - again vet says prob OK, but obviously will be an exclusion. Am I mad?

No, not mad, and if you really like the horse, and it will do the job you want it too - go ahead and buy, as long as the price is sensible. I have had horses with both, and aged 13, they have gone on for at least 10 more years of useful life, before either gives a problem. My Grey pony (first pony was 26, when his melenoma was the death of him - and V peaceful it was too) The bog spavin pony went on beyond that age.

Thanks for all your replies - we have now bought the pony! Vet assures me that insurance should not be affected by the bog spavin - I've insured with kbis, so hoping he's right. Any of you anything to report about insurance companies - are any worse or better for nit picking over vet reports (it's not too late to cancel the kbis insurance & go with someone else). Cheers and Merry Christmas.

I've had Genie over 4 years and she has had bog spavin from the word go. Insurance won't insure her for 'spavins' but I think that's them being a bit ott.

Hi Miss C - have your insurance company excluded all problems to do with the joints affected, or just the bog spavin specifically? Which company do you use?
