From the Scottish SPCA:
We are urging members of the public to be extremely cautious in any dealings with an individual claiming to represent 'Scottish Animal Welfare'. Our Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn warned, "We are concerned that an individual known to us through our enquiries has launched a website and social media sites using the name 'Scottish Animal Welfare' and is posing as a credible animal rescue organisation and a charity.
"We have serious concerns regarding this individual's activities and strongly encourage members of the public aware of an animal being abused or in distress to avoid contact with this individual and to report the matter to the Scottish SPCA or the police.
"This individual claims to run a 24-hour animal helpline, is promoting a telephone number very similar to our own and is using a name closely associated with the Scottish SPCA.
"We believe this individual is attempting to dupe the public into believing they are contacting the Scottish SPCA and we must stress that we have no relationship with this individual or 'Scottish Animal Welfare'.
"The Scottish SPCA is a reporting agency to the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Service and our inspectors are legally authorised to enforce animal welfare legislation. Any actions which may interfere with potential criminal proceedings are extremely serious.
"We are further concerned that this individual is describing 'Scottish Animal Welfare' as a 'registered not for profit organisation' and is seeking donations.
"This organisation is not a registered charity and we have reported our concerns to the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.
"Members of the public should be extremely cautious in any dealings they have with 'Scottish Animal Welfare' and should request identification if they are approached by this individual.
"Any concerns regarding this individual's activities should also be reported to the Scottish SPCA or the police." http://www.scottishspca.org/news/1338_scottish-spca-public-warning
