:( My poor pony is being taken to a back specialist later this week. Unfortunately I'm still really worried about him and what their going to say - so I thought I'd ask you guys. . .
He is totally fine with being girthed up , saddling etc. and mounting - he does dip his back slightly however this is habit as he had a very large rider and saddle 18" on a pony , before I had him. He's normally a very laid back boy , has good transitions and doesn't refuse any exercises - his canter is improving all the time ( he was only broken about 18months ago.) does not get the wrong leg.
However , he has taken to randomly bolting - doesn't matter if I am in walk , canter , good contact, loose rein , turning or on a straight line - it is utterly random! He isn't lame slightly stiff in lumber regions though and not at all spooky. Bolting is completely out of his character as he has always been a bit of a dope!

Any advice much appreciated as to what you think this might be or if any of you have experienced anything like this :)

You're doing the right thing for him, only a specialist can say what is wrong but it is obviously pain related. You don't give his age or height, but if he has been ridden by a heavy rider in a saddle more suited to a large horse I would say there is every possibility that they have done some damage. I hope the visit includes x.rays as this would be the best way to check for any damage to his spine.

Good luck with the visit and keep us posted.

Thank you, he is 15.1hh Connemara and 9 years old ;)

If he is truly bolting, then I personally wouldn't ride him.

A horse dipping its back, however slightly, when saddling or mounting is not normal, at all. There must be something going on and you are absolutely doing the right thing getting it investigated.

It could be all manner of things from serious to not serious at all, but try not worry until you get a diagnosis :)
