my mum is looking for a bomb proof horse for nice hacks out an about a confidence giver.

Between 14-15hh upto £1800 in Essex, do these even exist anymore, seen so many adds but nothing meeting that critia, is the price to low to find a nice sensible horse ?? :/

I think there like gold dust and tend to go through word of mouth ask around.
Saying that though I bought a nf x hackney stallion on that dreaded website dragon driving :D for less than 200 and he is the most bombproof pony I've ever owned in over 20 years of having horses, do they are out there :)

For the budget I think so yes.
As long as you aren't looking for something 'fancy' you stand a good chance! :) Keep looking, the right horse will turn up!

I have a 14.2 who would do the job, but she wouldn't be that price! I think price is the problem..

I completely and utterly couldn't disagree more.
I see horses for sale that fit this criteria all the time. Its just waiting for the right one.
Maybe I'm a cheapskate but if my only criteria was "bomb-proof" then I'd be sitting very happily with that budget.:)

I don't think it should be too hard to find tbh - winter's coming, people have no money no time, etc, etc. That said, word of mouth is a big way to buy and sell. And your budget sounds fine. :)

I know of one just come up for sale which is a 15hh totally bombproof, very safe sensible hack, 12 yr old gelding for £2000ono (would take £1800) but hes in derbyshire.

I bought mine for about half that money - he'd never been hacked out or seen traffic, but I've shown him pretty much everything now, and he is really unspooky and a fantastic horse. It was a bit of a chance to take, but I knew the guy would take him back if it didn't work out.

I have seen a fair few of that description and for that money. As much as Dragon Driving is slated, and there are some awful cases on their, there are in fact some beautiful horses on there too. Although my young mare was not advertised on there, another horse of that owner was, so I contacted them based on their other advert for a gypsy cob mare who was not what I was after, my young girl is lovely
Plus at this time of year people really start trying to sell off their horses

Just keep looking, I found one after horse 5 but the last time 20+ and no success. I advertised and gave up! Sorry. I think they are hard to come by. I found an old photo of horses I rode 35 years ago and I looked at it , all were 110% traffic, all in D snaffle(no fancy tack). One bucked sometimes rumble, all were sound and bombproof. They were worked really hard and I looked around and I dont know what the problem is out there.

My horse had been with Gypsys and yes I dont like reading some of the adverts for youngsters etc but they do work the horses and traffic proof most of them.

I really wish you good luck but they are hard to find even in recession, winter etc. Just make sure you try them out and do all the things you want to do. So many porkers out there. I even tried a dealer. I have an empty field, stables everything and gave up. My potential companion I had PTS September.

I am thinking of getting a couple of donkeys! ha!

Shame...have a very chunky 13.2/3hh conne x pony for a lot less, who's safe as they come and what I'd call a 'old school type' pony club pony [ie....completely safe to get on in a headcollar and go for a gallop, hunts/schools/jumps/hacks/etc no different, pretty enough but not a 'glamour model' pony, but is tough as they come and lives on nothing!]

I'm sure the OP is looking for a plod.:)

Where was this stated?

Also the 'competent rider' horse.. who said her mum WASN'T a competent rider..?

Also, 'good as second pony' often just means that the pony benefits from someone who knows what they're doing, not necessarily that the horse is dangerous.. or it would probably say "experienced rider only"

Don't get all defensive!!! It's just the was I read it. Someone who wants a confidence giver is normally looking for a plod in my experience (a calm cobby type horse or pony) not an Arab that's been there done and and got the tee-shirt.

I wasn't being defensive? I was simply questioning your input, just like you questioned mine?
I was looking for a confidence giver and found her in the form of a chestnut thoroughbred mare. Plenty of cobs can be nutters, it's worth looking at all breeds!

I'm sure you'll find something suitable, if you look at teenaged horses. As others have said try Dragon Driving, IME horses which have been driven are usually very sensible in traffic and most other situations.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with that budget. Knobberpony is a hand shorter that you are looking for and was £950 15 months ago.She is as bombproof as they come.I found her on a farm store noticeboard and have been looking for another like her for over a year now.

I have to agree with EC here.

Well, I do actually have bomb proof ponies but I don't think they are quite what the OP wants.;)

You see my farm is situated next door to a Ministry of Defence Weapons Training Area and they are immune to the sounds of explosions, helicopters, and low flying aircraft....:D

(And the ponies are definitely too young and fizzy to be anything like plods!)

I bought my Haflinger gelding for £800 3 months ago as he was uncatchable... The previous owner said he was a good hack, but I was a little dubious for the price. Anyway I was desperate for a Haffy and thought for that price (range from about 2k upwards for the age I wanted which was well out of budget) I could work on him. Turns out he is perfect! Hacks alone very confidently, doesn't spook, goes anywhere when in company, amazing breaks, he is just fab.

He saved the day tonight when my friends horse who she had never hacked before today, freaked out on the road. My pony jumped to her side and protected her from running into the traffic, then led the way home confidently. He is such a fab little man and worth his weight in gold to me. My bargain boy. xx

I bought my boy back in February for £1800 including good quality tack. He's a 15.2 11 year old Coloured cob. He's is bombproof and perfect in all ways, so they are out there, and he was local too :)

You reminded me thats why old boy(RIP) was fab in traffic, helicoptors, crow scarers...nuclear attack...his field in previous home was at landing strip of one of the London airports.100yards away! I couldnt believe it when we went to view him..carried on munching. But he had been owned and driven by gypsys. A lot can be said for desensitisation then! But MOD wow!

Sorry only just managed to get back on here, but yeah she's owned horses In the past( just cobby types for hacking) when her last one was pts she didn't want another and now does after a few years out.

But ideally she wants a cobby well built type, she loves the lovely cobs :) but it does need to be 100% as she's been out of riding for awhile & really does just want to plod about something with a lot of energy would be wasted with her.

Have looked on dragon driving and seen they have quiet a few, mostly young though :/
she's looking for something that's 7+ really or something that is proven to be well natured if it was younger. I shall be riding it aswel and it'll need to be good to hack out in company to accompany my rising 4yo.

She'd offer it a lovely home and it would want for nothing.

have a called a few tonight but mostly already sold or there not as bomb proof as the advert makes out :(

Don't knock arabs!! Mine is 6 and I can ride her anywhere!! She never gets silly or strong. She'll walk past a building site without a second glance and she's only been ridden for a year!
Cobs aren't the only calm horses out there :-)

Friend has just (about a month ago) bought a 15.2 mare 12 years old very quiet and gentle, bombproof so far for £1500 so yes I do think they are out there.

Also about two months ago another friend sold a 14.2 19 year old arab for £1000 that was very quiet and hacked out with no fizziness or spookiness with her 12 year old daughter.
