having had a lengthy chat with the bit bank, they have recommended I try a bomber bit for ben, they have a new one in, an egbutt happy tongue, if that doesn't work... A 2 1/2 Portuguese happy tongue. I initially called them about trialling a myler, but they think there will still be too much movement in that for ben... Sooooo, who has one, why did you end up trying one and what are your views on them?

Many thanks

I have a bomber happy tongue loose ring snaffle, which has been brilliant for my fussy TB. It's still very mild, but it's stiller, and has less tongue action. Sadly, it's not dressage legal :( ( no idea why, was talking to a BD judge who also thought it was a bit odd it wasn't legal, when most Mylers are)

It's because it has a port. But that is just one of the many stupid rules BD have about bits.

I'm sure it more a tongue relief than an actual port - it is wider and shallower. It doesn't act on the roof of the mouth - my TB would let me know VERY clearly if I used anything that harsh on him. Agree it's a daft rule - the mouth piece is raised therefore it's a port :(

I have one the happy tongue, recommended by the bit bank for my horse that was putting his tongue over everything. he exhausted my bit box . Unfortunately he hated that too, has a myler barrel roller with a low port now and likes the movement, has never even tried to put his tongue over that. He has the eggbut with hooks and the idea is to move to a dressage legal comfort snaffle later on. I would suggest you hire it to try first I have wasted hundreds on bits as local tack shops only have basic ones.

I have a happy tongue-loose ring, for my 5 yo- it is brilliant, cannot fault it, great for the horse with a bigger tongue- I use it for everything, including fun rides and autumn hunting.

Hi, yes that's the plan - to hire and try first. Ben is very tricksy, he HATES movement, which is why the recommended we try this over a myler, there is still a chance he will hate it as I certainly know he didn't like a NS, and whilst I put that down to the movement, he may dislike the taste :/ still, we can but try, I've certainly not ruled out trying a myler, but I like you have exhausted my options at home, and even bought a few for him to try with little success, the only thing I can fathom is the least movement the better he is, but then I get compromised on brakes. So the plan is to get this on a months trial, have his back and teeth done in the next fortnight, although the issue has been going on for a couple of years now and I know it's not his teeth or back, he is due to be done and I want to ensure we have the best platform for trialling the bit. I know we will find the right bit some day... I just hope that some day comes sooner rather than later!!!

BD changed the rule a few years ago about allowing a mix of metal in a bit. It is the port that makes it BD illegal. Shame as my horse is much happier in a ported snaffle.
